fixing SLS on 300TD wagon
Hi, I've got a 300TD wagon with a saggy rear end that makes a loud kathunk noise in the passenger rear when i go over big bumps. The previous owner already purchased a new SLS pump but didn't install it. So, I'm guessing thats the problem b/c the Hydraulic oil is dark grey/black, and from what I've researched that means the pump is bad. It isn't leaking Hydraulic fluid, but there is alot of sludge and gunk all over the front of the pump.
So, I started removing the old pump last night and got the 4 allen bolts unscrewed, but the thing won't budge off the block. I know the remaining 2 allen bolts are to hold the front of the pump on so they shouldn't hold it on judging from my new pump. Do I need to drain the HF before I take off the pump? Are there some secrets to doing this job b/c my Hanes manual doesn't say a thing about removing or replacing this thing. Any input will be mach appreciated. Thanks-- Will Pruett |

Quick question regarding SLS fluid...what is the general rule for changing it? There is no mention in the MB manuals and I couldn't find anything in a number of books I have either....

When my TE 4matic was nearing 5years old, around 100,000miles I took it into the dealer (regular service) and asked that all fluids be changed while it was in, I was told that there is no service interval for the hydraulic fluid. I've got to figure that 100k miles is time for a change, good round number. Some wagons change their own fluid.
Which 300TD do you have? A 123 or 124? Could also be the spheres / accumulators are bad.
