Motor Oil

Hello;
I have been using the Mobil One 0-40 in my 2007 C280. I do not like Mobil One and would like to use a better oil like Shell Rotella 5-40 Sythentic. Does anyone have any throughts on this oil? Thanks.

You're mistaken if the think the Shell is a better oil.

Unless you buy something from Europe, you wont' find a better oil than Mobil 1 European Formula.

You're looking to use Rotella (diesel) oil in a gas engine or is this a diesel?

Mobil 1 Turbo-diesel & truck is IMO the best widely-available diesel oil (also sold as Mobil Delvac 1). If availability isn't an issue, jump up to Red Line oil, AFAIK the only polyolester-based synthetic.

Shell Rotella 5w40 is the best synthetic oil you can buy right now. It carries both a diesel and gasoline rating. I've been using it on my 190e, 318i and 2 volvos for a couple of years. One of the volvos just went past 200k miles. I change it once a year or every 10k miles. You can't go wrong with this stuff.

Shell Rotella is a good oil, and I hesitate to get into an oil debate, but by what measurement is it "the best synthetic oil you can buy right now"?

See the oil analyses on BITOG. It's hard to beat this stuff especially for long OCI in a gasoline engine.

Less than $4/quart?
BS
Where? I'll buy everything they have in stock. I can use up 22 quarts between the 4 cars plus another gallon topping them off throughout the year. I would love to find it for less $4/qt anywhere.

Pardon me for not knowing what BITOG is.

Are there analyses of several different synthetic diesel oils or just the Shell Rotella?

Just curious since I've been using synthetic oils and oil ananyses since 1975, ...

bobistheoilguy forum. These guys take samples from the crankcase and send it in to be analized by a lab for various wear metals and the rate at which the additives in the oil discipate. I'll warn you now, you could spend hours reading through than various results. I find it interesting but some of these guys are REALLY into it.
I like this oil specifically because it has a diesel rating and an older SM gasoline rating and NO api "energy conserving" logo. Basically the latest api formulations are all about fuel economy and protecting the catalytic converter. Engine wear protection has taken a back seat. SJ and newer oil ratings aren't necessrily bad, just not what I'm looking for.
You can find results for just about every oil on the market.

You realize that he sells Amsoil?

The site has been around for a long time, some of the testing methods are not very scientific.

To my knowledge, Rotella has not been on MB's approved products list since they switched to Syn's. Its fine for anything old, especially diesels, but doesnt meet the specifications for anything from 96 to date.

Good answer, a sign of a truly analytical mind.

As I have been an SAE member for most of my career, I usually researched and gleaned my data from SAE technical papers and testing results. Reading the bobistheoilguy pages, where he has a vested interest in showing other oils to be inferior to an oil which he sells, and uses test methods like a small high-speed electric motor on straight-cut gears to indicate a lubricant's unsuitability for an internal-combustion engine, ... or running an air filter in his pickup-truck and cutting into it to compare colors photographed on his kitchen stovetop to indicate filter effectiveness/efficiency, ...

You believe whatever "testing" and results you wish, I'd rather believe those from independent labs run by Chemists, Engineers, and Scientists than "Bob".

BTW, unless it has changed, SAE offers all papers and books to non-SAE members (at slightly higher non-member prices) on their website. The "Bosch handbook" / Automotive Handbook is an excellent reference for many automotive and non-automotive subjects, I highly recommend it.
