Yep, another oil thread Synthetic for Northern Climates....

Well I read about 20 threads on synthetics.

Going with Mobile 1. Its easy to get around here and I am not a fan of Amsoil. So lets get that out of the way!

But what the threads did not go into detail on was oil weights, just about switching to synth. And most were in the Diesel section anyway. So on my 91 560 SEL, what would you recommend for a year-round oil? Temp here get near 100 in summer for a brief time and drop to below 0 also. 10W-40 is what the guide recommends, but I am curious as to what others are actually using for a synthetic.

Thanks much!

Same viscosity as the manual recommends in dino oil. I put Mobil 1 Turbo-Diesel and Truck in my Mercedes M103/M104/OM602/OM603 engines.

0w50? Where do you find that? (I'm curious)

5w40 should be just fine.

Rotella T6 5w40 is a great oil and its cheap. Summer or winter 5w40 seems to be a pretty good synthetic weight for gas and diesel MB's.

Is the M117 new enough not to be affected by the lack of ZDDP in modern oils?

I think ZDDP is more of a concern for engines not broken in yet. At least form what I have read.

Thumbs up

In WI I would run 15/50 summer and 0/40 winter.

15/50 has very high ZDDP, like Diesel oil style high.

I believe T6 has a better helping of ZDDP then some other oils. I know the guys on the TDI forums rave about it.

FWIW the M1 5w40 oil is actually thicker at temp then the 0w40 oil. The 0w oil is just into the 40w range, the 5w is well into it.

Change the oil weights based on season.. Synthetic or not just stick with the correct weights for temperature expected. Follow the book.

With that said, you sure you want to switch? I mean, the only real advantage you will gain is extended oil change intervals, which is the primary reason they use it in the 97 and up models (FSS oil change schedule) You stand to gain leakage and possibly premature camshaft failure if ZDDP is in fact needed on these cars.

Given that formulations have technically gotten worse more recently (Less ZDDP) I'd stick with something close to what the engine was designed with for that era- high ZDDP.

I'm running 150K on my C36 on 15w40 Shell Rotella T year round with no usage, no leaks and no ill effects. M1 in vehicles that call for it, of course.

5W40 it will be then with regular checks to see what milage I can get out of it. Hoping for 5k between changes. Mainly its interval change increases I am looking for. I have gotten very use to 10k plus between. 3k is just silly, in fact I think my manual recommends 5k anyway for the 560.

With syn you could probably go at least 7500. Have it tested. The 'benz uses enough that being able to extend the change a few thousand miles will pay for the testing.

I run 5k on my truck (2002 s10 chevy ) and the Benzs and my Pontiac (radical 455 / Holley carb) maybe 1K between changes- it dillutes oil that bad when it's parked and the bowls empty.

Due to modern engine /fuel management oil also lives a lot longer in newer cars.

The truck gets whatever brand name 10/30 on sale- usually Mobil 5000 if available, and the cars all run Rotella.

You should be fine even at 7K on synthetic I would imagine if the engine is reasonably sound. Watch your consumption or spring for a blackstone test at 5K and whatever they say.

Rotella 15W-40 seems to work well in my 300CE. I would like to try something thinner for winter months. I think a 5W-40 diesel oil is a good grade for year around use. What is the difference between Mobil 1 Delvac and regular Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel? Where can I find the Delvac in Canada? I haven't seen it at any chains or auto parts stores.

Delvac is a conventional oil from what I remember. I am still using the $3 gallons I purchased last year in most of my vehicles when it was on sale + the Mobil rebates.

Do not worry about leaks arising from using syn, just means it was ready to begin leaking anyway. On a 150k M117 you just have to worry about the valve cover gaskets and the oil level sender. This is not your SBF that starts to leak from the oil pan and front main at 100k.

Hell you could just run 5/40 syn Diesel year round and change it every six months.
