126 diff R & R

I'm a bit baffled by the two forward mounting screws on the diff for the 1989 300SE. The screws pass through a lower rubber bushing, the diff itself, and an upper rubber bushing.

I see no nut above the upper rubber bushing and the EPC shows no nut.

Is the upper rubber bushing tapped to take the screw?

If not, what exactly is securing the screw? At the present time, the screw and the bushings rotate together...........and nothing is getting removed.

I cannot feel any nut above the bushing??

Although completely different cars, my 300e had a nut at the top.

Can you squeeze a camera in there for a pic?

where does it connect to the body/subframe?

The early W-126 also has a nut at the top.

I might try that camera idea............I cannot get my head up there, but the camera might...........

The mounting point is a separate piece of welded on steel whereby you can access the top of it. The steel piece is welded to the subframe.

Brian, the upper nut is stamped in the washer that part of the bushing. You'll need a 22mm socket to get it out. There is not much there to grab, it is about 3mm tall. I always wondered how the rust belt cars would fair with that shallow of a nut.

Richard, you're a champ.

On the passenger side, there is no possibility of getting a 22mm socket over that bushing. The sheet metal over that area is way too close.

I suppose I'll try a 22 mm open end wrench. Even a box wrench won't make it to the far side.

The driver side has considerably more access.

I sure hope I can save that bushing............can you believe a new one is $70...........

If you destroy it, PM me. I can go through my pile and find you some good bushings.

I managed to get a 22 mm open end wrench on both of them. Came out without a problem once the wrench caught the flats.

They are both in good shape, thankfully.
