Tap tap or metallic clank at start up on cold days

It has turned off colder (around 40 degrees at night); when starting the 1991 560SEL first thing I hear a tap tap tap or metallic clank for a few seconds. Then, the car is quiet the rest of the day, both while driving and upon starting again after operating temperature is reached. About two years ago, it was making sounds upon startup so I switched to Chevron Delo LE 15W40 motor oil which quieted the tap tap tap sound.

This morning, with the car cold and as an experiment, I removed the ignition switch cap located on the fender wheel (driver's side) and turned the starter until I could see oil pressure rise. Then, I reattached the ignition switch cap and started the car. The car started immediately with no tap tap or clank whatsoever. Any ideas?

You have a common case of collapsed or stuck hydraulic lifters. One or more of them are making a racket. Nothing to worry about.

I have them too, they don't make noise every time I start the car, just depends on which valves end up where when I turn the engine off. Cold weather causes it to be more frequent as well. Noise goes away when the oil pressure comes up.

I haven't done anything about it, and if I could find out which ones were making noise I would change them sometime perhaps. However it's not a nuclear emergency at this moment. Been living with it for years, just replaced valve seals and the train looked like it was brand new so I'm not losing any sleep over it.

My M103 does the same thing. I don't worry about it. I don't think you need to either. I doubt harm will come to the parts coming in contact for a few seconds at cold temps. There's always a thin layer of lubricant on internal engine components, no?

Have you considered a thinner cold weather blend? 5W30? My dealer uses that weight in mine.

I'm thinking of switching to this product...it has boosted zinc levels for extra protection.

AMSOIL - SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil (AMO)

plus, I'm looking at various prelube systems that will bring oil pressure up to normal BEFORE turning the key in the ignition. I'm thinking that is the best and safest way to start any engine.

I wouldn't unless I just felt the need to spend money. Mobil Oil Corp. has spent a few bucks in the labs, enough so that I am relatively sure that their formulation is adequate. I've used Mobil One in my Mooney since 1978 and it mics the same every year. That's good enough for me.
And........it gets to sit for days at a time without being started, then it gets to go up where it does get cold, then it gets to come down where it does get hot and it gets some fairly high supercharging also. So, if you are looking for a place to put some money, I'd buy shares in Mobil.......just sayin'.

Unless you live where it gets cold, cold, then I would not use any oil in a M-B with less than a 40w upper rating (40W upper viscosity with a 0 or 10 lower rating, a 0 rating will work quite well anywhere below the sub-Artic winters of northern Canada for example). Don't use any oil additives that would cause the viscosity rating to be lowered (i.e. Techron, Sea Foam, ect.). It is not the case of dirty components but, simple, the action of metal being chilled causing contraction and widening of valve lifter clearances because of this "contraction action" (sometimes I just love the Yinglish language). And, when the spring thaw comes, the valves will behave themselves and hush their clattering.

My dad's 420 does the same thing, a couple of the lifters tap for about 5-10 seconds when started cold first time of the day....not a big deal.
