Unhappy Power Steering Problem - Need Advice

I have a 1987 190E 2.6. My brother-in-law was helping me replace the belt tensioner assembly. He's knows more than I do. After taking the old belt tensioner assembly and replacing it with the new one, the power steering stop working. Is it just a coincidence that the power steering pump failed or did he miss something when installing the new belt tensioner assembly. There's no leak that we notice, but opening the lid on the power steering pump shows no movement of the fluid, which my brother-in-law says that the power steering pump has failed and need to be replace. The power steering was working before replacing a part. Hope someone can give advice before purchasing a new power steering pump.

p/s

Arnel;
The first thing I would check is for proper routing of the serpentine belt and for proper tension.
When standing in front of the car the p/s pulley should be turning clockwise,with the engine stopped try too turn the p/s pulley by hand,it sould not turn.

Thumbs up P/S

Mike;

Thanks for the great advice the routing of the serpentine belt was not correct and was turning counter-clockwise. I just hoped we didn't damaged the Power steering pump, but when we try to put the belt back to the correct routing we had a hard time. Either the belt is too short when it was replace by the last mechanic that work on it and just bypass one of the pulleys or we just don't know the proper technique to put it on. Any advice on this is appreciated.

Look Very Closely!

The serpentine belt will fit a couple of ways ALMOST! Check the diagram in your manual very closely. I took an hour trying to replace mine a couple of different ways until during a lunch break I went and looked CLOSELY at the manual. Yes my belt was always too short in practice even though it was the exact mesurement !!!! Live and Learn. Good luck
