Smile W126 New clutch new life!

Just replaced the clutch on my 1980 W126 280SE. What a difference. It shifts so much better now. Either there was an extremely heavy duty clutch or it was over heated and the springs were "re-tempered" to be very stiff. I also have new tires on it (went on 25 miles before clutch blew) so that helps as well. Shifter is still lousy but I can see some new bushings on the rods will help a bit. Even with new bushings I do not think it will shift very well those rods are long and it feels like you are stirring pudding. But i am comparing to my Miata and that has one of the best feeling shifters of any car. Hope to be getting a digital camera soon or at least get some film developed so I can post some photos. It is not in great shape but fun to have a family truckster with a stick. Keeps the wife from driving it.

W126 and a standard trans... that's great! Too bad it wasn't an option on the big V8s -- what a hoot.

Enjoy the 280SE!

What an outstanding car that would be, a 5 speed manual euro 560SEL. A conversion wouldn't be impossible though would it? Actually I am just about up for a tranny rebuild, maybe I channel this money into a manual conversion :-)

I would loooooooove a manual transmission in my 420.
Would this really be feasible? Has there ever been a w126 V8 manual tranny?

No I don't think there has ever been a manual V8, I am sure though that a Getrag 5spd or something similar could be used. A bellhousing would be needed that would suit, hardest part is probably the flywheel and the spigot bearing in the crank that supports the input shaft of the manual gearbox. Both these would need to be custom made which would be quite expensive.

I know there were manual euro R107 350SL's and maybe some euro 450SL's, there was never a manual V8 in a sedan or coupe body.

I believe there is a 380SEL in San Antonio with a Four-speed manual. Euro of course.

There were manual 5-spds hooked 4.5/5.0/5.6 motors but not from MB directly. AMG had these as an option if you wanted it, was a Getrag 5 sp 'box. The factory did not have a 'box strong enough and even used their auto 'box in there rally cars as it was the only thing in house to hold up to the stresses.

There is a bushing in the shifter base too which will make a big difference.

V8 manual and shifter bushings

I have a 3.5 V8 with a 4 spd in my 71 euro 107 SL. I need to replace all of the shift rod bushings then I imagine the shifting is going to improve dramatically.

Have you found a source for them for your 126? They are likely universal, much like the throttle linkage bushings.
