I was at the junk yard yesterday and I found a transmission just sitting on the ground, I think it was for a 123....I'm not sure. Anyways, I decided to take it apart because I wanted to see what would be expected since my reverse has been out for almost 2 years and I haven't had it rebuilt yet. It was actually pretty simple to remove the front of the bell housing and get to the gears. My question is, where is the B3 band? I'm guessing if I actually took mine apart I would have no problem finding it since it would probably be ground to $#!*@.I noticed that the frictioon disks are grouped together in one large cylinder-like pack. I removed 2 of those packs, each containing about 4-5 friction disks (sprockets?) held in place by a metal ring, you can see one of the lying face down in one of the pictures. So yeah, it was a simple task to take everything apart once tranny was out, probably took me 30 minutes to get it to where it is. Only problem I would have is actually detaching my tranny from the motor and getting it out. I only have the one car and I need it to go to work. And yes, its been 2 years, I don't park in a decline where I would have to reverse out, only inclines and level surface i am able to reverse out of

The transmission in the pictures you took is a 722.1 transmission. It was put in Mercedes vehicles up to about 1984 after that the 722.3s and 722.4s took over propper...
There is a big difference between the 722.1 and the 722.3/4 transmissions. Thanks for the insight! I wasn't expecting to learn much, I just wanted to see what it would be like and how involed it would be by working on a tranny. The disks are still somewhat similar.

If you have a clean and dry working environment and patience the mechanics is within the reach of many a DIY mechanic - but you do need the manual too!

Just fixing reverse in your car (722.3)is really quite simple. It's not far back at all behind the front pump. Changing the clutches is easy. If the seals are shot that's a bit more involved. But, yeah, dinking around with a 722.1 isn't going to be all that instructive.

so to fix the reverse bands what do I replace? is it just the friction disks? (and yes, I know about doing everything while I'm there or anything else that needs to be done, but I'm just wondering about the reverse bands and what parts I would need to order)
