M111 Camshaft Dent? C230

I'm looking to buy a W202, and was looking at one this afternoon. Got lotsof good tips for what to look for reading through here.

When I opened the oil fill port on the camshaft cover, noticed 2 things. There are dents / chips in the cast portion of the camshaft (not on the lobes), has anyone ever seen this?

Also, there was an orange tint to the interior of the cam cover, like it was a little rusty. Not sure if you'll be able to see it in the picture. I had been informed the car was well cared for and had frequent oil changes, but this gave me some pause. For reference the car has 156k.

Thoughts?

The cam looks fine, maybe someone used a metal funnel to put oil into the engine? Anyways I wouldn't sweat that, MB cam and other engine parts are pretty rugged components, and the M111 is no exception, pretty tough.
The staining, I think you mean similar to around the oil fill cap, pretty normal look, nothing to worry about.

That yellow colour within the engine might indicate cheap oil has been used but at 156,000 miles most engines are not going to look stain free on the inside. Did you run the engine with the the oil filler cap removed? Was there evidence of blow-by?

That chip mark on the camshaft looks strange - but may be it is a trick of the light...

...it might seem totally different with the rocker cover off.

That's good news, thanks! It is not a trick of the light, however, I reached in and felt it.

I have yet to put the car up on a lift, but the remaining questions are:
1) Inside the trunk, there is some rust in the spare wheel well (just surface for now), and also along the inside of the bumper as seen from the spare wheel well.
2) The cruise control stalk is loose and cruise doesn't work, so will have to look into effort required to fix it.

Other than that, car is in relatively good condition and I'm considering the purchase.

I would assume there are some worn suspension parts unless they have been replaced.

I was concerned about that too - won't know for sure until I get under the car.

However, previous owner did reweld the strut tops to remove some rust, and put new front springs in.

See if it's just the cruise stalk or of the one for the turn signal also seems loose, I have seen the screws loosen up for the combination switch which also makes the cruise stalk pretty wobbly. Easy fix.

Most sand castings are rough, that is normal. You might even have some rough spots on the sides of the lobes, also normal.

It might have missed a few oil changes along the way, I would not be concerned.
