1997 E420 SRS Fuse
My car keeps blowing the 10 amp SRS fuse. Problem started several weeks ago. Had an Indy run the codes and he came up with 032&033 {communication interference}. Replaced the fuse, reset everything and it was good for a few weeks. Repeat x 3. The only common occurance is that it happens when I first start the car and put it in reverse to back up. Fuse blows and continues to blow each time I replace it and turn the ignition to on. Could a weak battery cause this? We have had the seats out and all the wires, modules exposed and cant find the culprit. It is, of course, intermittent; which makes the problem even more fun to find

As a trouble shooting aid....wire up a small 12V lamp in place of the fuse. The lamp will come on instead of the fuse blowing when whatever is causing the over current happens.

With the fuse removed / blown, see if anything else is not working. ESPECIALLY a do-it-yourself radio/stereo, navigation, amplifier, etc. Sometimes people connect add-on electronics to any old circuit!
And look in your owner's manual and/or any printed information on the fuse box or fuse box cover [inside?] which says what all is on each circuit. When checking, also be sure to place it in reverse and see if the white back-up lights still come on in the rear of the vehicle. Other than that, follow where that wire goes and check for shorts to ground. Something could be pressing that wire up tight against a sharp piece of metal. |

I've had the seats out and wiring harness out of the door sills and traced the wires but cant find a short. The codes are u0032 and u0033 which is communication interference L&R side airbags {electro-magnetic interference}.
There is an aftermarket radio which used to share the same fuse as the SRS. I thought that might be the problem so I changed the ignition power source from that fuse to the cigarette lighter, which is on a different fuse. I've tried everything I know to trace the problem. It is intermittent which makes it worse. I can get everything reset and put in a new fuse only to have it happen again in a few days. Last resort would be the dealer but that would cost more than the car is worth!

Well if SRS wires were cut / spliced, THAT would certainly be the problem. Some wires are "shielded" meaning they are protected from outside electrical noise. Cutting into that sort of wire could cause trouble.
Also SRS wiring might be totally monitored for resistance or capacitance to be DARN sure it has not been messed with and will work in an accident. That wiring might need to be replaced if someone tapped into it to connect a radio or whatever. More modern cars have high speed computer networks running over special wiring. Cutting and splicing one of those wires can cause all sorts of trouble! I would advise taking it to a factory authorized repair facility - be honest and say someone tapped into the SRS wiring. Same with selling the vehicle. Tell them the SRS system has been modified and is not working. I would make them sign a paper stating they were advised of that - protects you should they be in an accident and the air bags do not deploy - someone gets killed. |

I didn't tap into the SRS wiring. The factory radio harness and SRS system work off of the same fuse. When the aftermarket radio was installed, an adapter was used that plugged directly into the Bose wiring harness. The radio and SRS worked for 4 years with no problem. I only changed the radio over to the cigarette lighter circuit so that nothing but the SRS was on the blown fuse circuit and it could be isolated from the radio.
The SRS wiring circuit has never been messed with. I may just have to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer; at least for diagnostics.
