Oil Pan sealant and gasket Merc 450 slc

HI All

I currently busy with an overhaul. I have removed the oil pan and cleaned it, However the original gasket is intact and stuck solid to the oil pan.

I have purchased a new gasket.

Now, do I remove the old gasket , which may be very time consuming.

Or could I just use some RTV sealant on the old gasket stuck to the oil pan and install.

or (this sounds silly) could I just place the new gasket onto the old gasket , using the RTV sealant in between and install.


any thoughts ?

I would remove the gasket to install the new one WITHOUT sealer. I'd use a gasket remover or aggressive paint stripper to soften it up and a low speed wire wheel to actually remove it without damaging the sealing surface.

never use RTV,use form a gasket instead. That silicone get everywhere inside engine,clogging oil screen

Use Permatex "Aviation Form a Gasket" with the gasket.

Always always always remove the old gasket!

It is indeed very tedious but not as tedious as continuous oil leaks or worse still having to to the job again.

Do not put a gasket on a gasket with extra goo - you are wasting your time and probably moving the leak to another place (think about crankshaft seals)

Get some gasket remover - usually spray on stuff in a can. Works a charm. Use a plastic scraper on aluminium alloy parts.

If you are worried about leaks or corrosion between ferrous and non ferrous parts consider a gasket dressing such as Hylomar
