Can you use W124 axle shaft on W201?
I have a 190DT, I believed the axle shafts are the same as 2.6 and 16V,
but those are also difficult to find too. My question is, can I use one that are from W124 300e or 300D? Thanks. |

You are right, the axle shafts from either a 16v or 2.6 would work, but I don't think ones from a W124 will work, it's a wider track. Parts numbers are not the same. 2.6s come up in the yards near me once in a while, but be aware that they are not easy to pull. I've never completely separated one from the rear diff but removing the rear diff along with them is a task in and of itself. You'll need a long breaker bar and a 30MM 12 point socket plus a hex bit socket, regular sockets, and wrenches to remove the diff from the rear subframe and from the driveshaft.
Otherwise, you can buy used on eBay or new at about $600 a side, this is the parts number: 2013508110

Thanks W123fanman,
I know is a difficult task, that's why i want to get a new or rebuilt, but, either they are expensive or not available. The w124 are cheap and available everywhere. Too bad they don't fit. |

You need to be patient, they come up from time to time. Keep an eye on e-bay. Other things you want to keep a lookout for are upper and lower radiator hoses and the three exhaust sections. This is important stuff for the 190DT that have gone NLA.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't find them particularly difficult to remove. The important thing is to clean out the head and use the correct 12pt tool. If nothing else works, grind or drill the head off. The stub can be removed after the axle is out with a stud puller or monkey wrench. |

What year car are you working on?
Track width is only part of the equation, a wide track car with a larger rear differential ( wider ) might have the same axle as a narrow track car with a smaller diff ( narrower. ) As an example, go to car-part dot com , look up a 97 C280 without traction control ( no ASR ) , it uses the same axle as a 87 - 95 E class. You might be able to swap joints and reuse your axle shaft. |

W201 and w202 have different output flanges on the diffs. Same 185mm carrier though.
For the OP the only ones that work are 2.6, 16v, and diesel. Furthermore any asd diff will complicate the situation. One option that may not be what you want to hear is go to the smaller diff. I have one in a spare subframe I picked up for $100. Theyre cheap. Another trick to make this easier is pop the springs out on each side so you can get the suspension up in full compression. It makes the bolt heads more accessible if your xzn tool is girthy. You'll find it makes it easier to get the axles off the diff too.

I wouldn't change diffs, since you would have to change ratios also (2.5t is the only 201 that uses the 2.67 diff). The axles are hard to come by, but not impossible. I had to toss one last year when the outer CV joint locked up, and I was able to find a spare. Just be patient, one will turn up.

Did not know about that ratio. Disregard my comments about swapping.

Here's a handy chart of 190 axle ratios. The 2.5T is unique.

Thank you everyone for your input.
I think I might just rebuild mine instead of trying to buy an used one. The CV joint is about $84 plus the boot for $31. |

I don't know where you live but there is an 1984 190D at the Pick Your Part in Sun Valley.

2.2 won't work with 2.5T, it will fit, but, in long run, I will be replacing it again.
We have one here too in Oakland, I live in San Francisco. |

Actually, it won't fit at all. The flange diameter is smaller.
