I have a 1980 450SL where the speedo cable seems to stick. At low speeds (less than 25 mph)the needle bounces and at higher speeds you can hear a clicking noise. I would like to replace the cable but do not know how to get the gauge cluster out. Any suggestions? Do I need to remove the steering wheel first (no airbag)?

Yes. The steering wheel has to come off to get the cluster out. Remove the small plastic "Star" in the center of the horn pad with a small screwdriver (pry it out) to get to the nut. You can also get at the cable from under the dash after you remove the lower panel.
