My present Audi A8's name is Magnum after a Rottweiller I had.
My present 76' 280C's name is Caramel, my license plate says CARAML.
My previous 74 220's name was princes, she was powder blue.
My previous Audi V8 quattro was Nittro, It was a 1990 (Ni) and a quattro (ttro)

I have never seen such widespread car naming as this forum.
I think it has to do with personality type. Everyone familiar with MBTI or Meyer-Briggs?? The more feeling types, vs. thinking types, will tend to be more emotionally connected, and thus name their car. And they get all fussy about it. OMG!!

I would have never thought of naming a machine, although wifey calls mine my german girlfriend because I spend more time with the car than her.

But yeah, whatever. I think it's a bit effeminate.
These same people probably name their privates too.

I think it's got to do with involvement. Wrenching on a car gives it a personality, it almost becomes alive. Pilots in the war used to name their planes. No, I don't have a name for my privates but some of my girlfriends have.

Adzo-- the relentless ponton. 1958 180D. Runs no matter what. Can't be stopped. Even if the brakes don't work, it still gets driven ...just shorter distances and slower speeds.

These cars must have Germanic names. I know ponton owners who call their cars Otto, Ludwig, Reinhart and Irma. Never "Stevie" or "Bonnie." The cars would refuse to run out of shame!!

I agree. I've only named one car, my '55 180. Her name is Leyna which is old German meaning little angle, because she is. I refer to my other cars as "the yellow car" or 'the '72" or the S500.

True that. And we name our boats/yachts.

But I haven't heard of names for RV's, private planes, houses, other types of cars, heavy construction equipment, and the list could go on.

Seems like it's a vintage mercedes thing. And apparently in some hot-rod circles.

I'm still not naming my car.

Special cars are not like computers or heavy machinery. My wife drives a 2009 Volkswagen EOS; which is called "the EOS". We own six cars currently. Some vintage cars have distinct personalities and soulfullness worthy of being named.

My 1962 Mercedes is that type of car. The original owner drove it for 40 years and loved it like a member of the family. He named the car "The Emerald Bullet" and it feels right to refer to the car by name.

My 1973 280 Coupe is another special car. The original owner was Shirley Temple and the car is gold. We named that car "Goldie Locks" and that name feels right for what is arguably a unique, one-of-a-kind type vehicle.

If a car is one of one-million I would not bother to name it unless I had developed some emotional attachment and the car had presented some characteristics worthy of a special name.

Loved your you-tube slide show on the green 220. Nice car (now!). I really liked the water beading up on the new paint - isn't that a pretty sight!
Neat story on the 280 coupe. Shirley Temple - really??

I'm still not naming my car(s).

Since my last post on ths thread, I've acquired three W123 240Ds. Sometimes it's just easier to identify multiple cars with a name. So instead of refering to my diesels as 'my automatic 240D' or 'my rustic & rusty stick-240D', I've named them 'Miss Diesel' and 'Beirut-Taxi'. My latest navy-color solid-body MT 240D is 'Ol'Blue'!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Hi mark. Do by chance have a brother named Steve that lived in Cypress Texas in the late 70's?

There's someone else on one of these forums, that's also name their 240D 'Beirut Taxi'.
Unfortunately, I got tired of dealing with the rust, so I sold my Beirut Taxi to a neigbor. He, and his wife, really like how the car drives, so he's planning a full fix-up & repaint
Meanwhile, I'm hoping to sell 'Miss Diesel' by the end of summer.
Sorry I couldn't come up with a more clever name for my latest 240D, besides 'Ol'Blue'.
Maybe, if I sell the other one, my 'keeper' could become Miss Diesel II. Or, how about 'My Blue Lady'?

Happy Motoring, Mark

I almost forgot about "One Pin," a '68 Rambler American I had. I did not name it, though. It had "One Pin" painted on the back when I purchased it and I just left it there. The car was referred to as the One Pin and was a conversation starter. The joke was that there was one pin holding the whole car together and if removed the car would fall apart

Never named my cars although I always thought it was kind of cool for those who did (especially in the movie "gone in 60 seconds")

My first Mercedes was a w116 1980 280SE euro spec. Then I bought a W126 560SEL and referred to them as big sis (560) and little sis (280) in a facebook post. Well my friend always calls them that now...

I was going to name my 560SEL Allison, but then maybe a month after I bought it I met a girl named Allison and thought it would be pretty creepy

At the moment it's name changes depending on which of my friends I'm talking to; one refers to it as "The Sheik", another calls it "Blue Falcon".
