My wife brought it into our marriage. It's had the engine and automatic transmission rebuilt. It has some rust in the rear quarters and the floor pans. The rear calipers are froze up and the rear shocks need replacement. It runs good and the tranny seems fine. Also, the drivers side window mechanism is in pieces inside the door. Any advice on selling it would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you located? Often location dictates price. it sounds like $500 to $1000 with listed issues. In some parts of the country more, some less.

These cars don't fetch alot of money, even in near perfect condition and, with an automatic, the gas fours aren't much more economical than the smoother, more powerful six cylinder versions. Rust is a major issue on these cars.
Off the top of my head, if the rust is severe, maybe $500, If the rust is minor, perhaps $1000 or more. If the rust is minor and you fix the shocks, brakes and window it might bring over $1500. The mechanical flaws you listed are fairly easy to fix. Are you selling because of these problems, or just have too many cars? If your heirloom 220 has been reliable, I'd be tempted to fix and keep it. Happy Motoring, Mark

Thank you:)
Thank you so much for your comments.....
I guess I'm going to have to accept what the market will bear..... I'm in Michigan in the act of moving to Tennessee, I have nowhere to go with the car. I was going to make a project of it just for the fact that it runs so well for it's age. I feel badly for my wife tying up all that cash in it. But that's how it goes. Lesson learned ![]() |

Sorry, I didn't realize the situation. Properly marketed with good documentation of the rebuild work could result in a higher sale price.
Clean it up and get it running decent and go for it. If you find that right person you might come out a lot better. With the internet you can reach a lot of folks. Folks around here tend to be kindof guarded in the wallet department. Tom W

I suggest fixing some of the problems to help the resale.
You may be able to fix the window regulator for very little money. What usually happens on these is the alloy pivot pin that attaches the lift-arm and helper-spring loosens and allows the arm to fall off. It's possible to drill the pivot-pin center for a small self-tapping screw and attach a washer large enough to secure it in it's hole. The pivot-pin may still be a loose fit in the hole, but so long as the screw and washer retains it, the regulator will work. Rebuilt calipers can be had for a decent price, but I recommend replacing their brake hoses at the same time. In the case of your rear brakes, you might need new rear hoses anyway, as the OE W115 calipers may have been superceded to the later W123 style, which replaced the original short hose/bracket & connector pipe with a longer hose connected directly to the caliper. Unless they're actually broken, I wouldn't worry about the shocks.

I redid a 71 220 with 97K and it brought nearly 1500, but it was in very very good shape. With rust and what you mention 750 tops

Buzz word for me to avoid for me is "rebuild." Like who did the work? Rarely does 'build do justice to the original shortblock and tranny. Corny as saying "ran when parked" 12 yrs ago.

Thanks so much guys.....
I'm moving from one state to another and don't intend bringing the old girl along. I'm really only interested in giving her a good home. We're ok with cutting our losses and moving on. A lesson well learned...... I'm in Michigan with it....it seems a thousand bucks for a running vehicle is do-able...if not I'll just find some place to keep it till I can take care of it's maladies and drive it myself.
Thank you so much for you input ![]() Last edited by Windhawk; 08-16-2007 at 07:02 PM. Reason: typos |

Jim, I can be found at Moody's saloon at odd hours. Going out of town next weekend though. Not sure how long I'll be hangin out here, could be headin to Washington in near future for bizz opportunities.
Windhawk, good luck with the 220D automatic. Unfortunately with Winter approaching you're basically screwed. Thats when demand for old diesel project cars drops like stone. Maybe toss it in storage till next spring and you'll be better off. Last edited by 300SDog; 08-19-2007 at 04:40 AM. |
