Idle,
Very cool (no pun intended) info on the rear a/c! It don't recall if the system in these has one or two fans (think just one). Components haven't been used in this one for about 40 years (when lines were cut to install v8) so who knows what's left workable. Surely ArticKar replacement bits are hard to come by......

I think the best way to ever find them would be to just post a photo, say what they are and, and ask if anyone knows if they came from a Ford Falcon or a Chevy Malibu? All the after market A/C units used off the shelf parts. The hard parts to find are the knobs, vents and cases since these were normally the only parts unique to each different brand. |

Just wanted to chime in with an update. Been busy with enjoying the holidays over the past few weeks, hopefully everyone has had a great holiday season.
I have the title lined out now and legally own the car. Next move is to extract it from the barn. Hopefully towards the end of this March. |

I seem to recall that the first 300 series cars to go "automatic" used a GM 4-spd hydramatic, not the ubiquitous Borg Warner 3 speed.
Am I wrong about that? On the subject of rear mounted AC systems, a common "boot" air unit installed on luxury euro cars in the 1950s and early 60s was a Chrysler Airtemp design. Rolls Royce used them for notheast delivery cars in the late 1950s until they developed their own "enhanced capacity" unit in late 1958. Their first foray into air conditioning in 1956 was a disaster...The units were wholly unsuitable for use in seriously hot climates. I believe Jaguar also used the Chrysler units. A Texas company also designed a rear unit for the Rolls Royce Silver Clouds that were delivered to the West Coast...

Just a little update. I spoke with Mr. Hanson at the Classic Center and he was a huge help. Very friendly and provided me with a copy of the original build sheet as well as. The car was commissioned in 1958 and the build potentially completed in early 1959. Originally delivered to a dealership in Indiana.

Which is consistent with your observations on knobs and the like. If you have paperwork that says its a 61 that may easily mean that it stood around on the dealer's lot for 2 years waiting for a buyer and then it sold in 61 so the DMV called it a 61. That happened often on an expensive car back then when every state had its own rules on paperwork and no computers helped us get things consistent.

Unfortunately I have not. I have the original owner's manual and a few receipts from over the years (maybe 5 or so) but no service/workshop manuals or anything. |

If you need any specifications or information about a particular topic, I would be willing to look it up and send you photos of the pages I have. I have only seen photos of your type Mercedes. Wanted to share a fresh shot of the motor that I took. This is exactly how it sits right now. Fairly well preserved and complete for it's age. At least cosmetically!
