72 280se 4.5 - different elect fuel pump?

I had a small drip coming from the elect fuel pump that ended up just needing a new hose and band. While evaluating I noticed this car has a much different fuel pump than the new ones one can purchase online. See pictures. It is has a larger diameter and the electrical connects and the one fuel line is located on the rounded side of the unit going toward the engine. Anyone know what this type of pump is? I didn’t see it in any online documents etc. In case I need one in future 😎

Thanks,

Dan

It looks like my 4.5's if memory serves, but I no longer have it so I can't verify.

this is indeed an original pump. Replace it when you need to without shedding a tear. -CTH

It is the original, and that is the pump your car needs. But, they are longer made. Bosch/MB did come up with a replacement using another Bosch pump. It will work, but the internal relief valve pressure is on the high side given the hose clamped fuel rail system on the Djets. There is a better option. A Nissan 280z pump. It is identical to the original djet pump and a direct replacement. They are available from nissan dealers online. I dont have the number in my memory banks, but could find it if you are interested.
I bought one of these pumps as a spare, but the original in my 72 still works fine.

17011-P7211 is the Nissan pump model. A search on ebay, amazon or google may find one.

From a purely historical stand point this is an interesting set up. The mounting bracket, or at least a part of it, from an earlier car, a pump metal shield from an earlier car, and a pump that looks like it came right off of a 1972 450sl.

Neither here nor there except for the metal shield. Owner's of 250se cars seem to always be looking for one with little or no rust.

It's a 280SE 4.5 Djet. Not surprising that it would have exactly same pump and pump bracket as the 72 350/450SL Djet. No idea about the metal shield though.

For the 108 and 109 250se, 300se, 280se, and 6.3 people that metal shield is the big find. They rust through, allowing road spray to crud up their short body electric fuel pump. And those pumps are very expensive to replace.

So, yeah, it's nice to know the 108 4.5 and I would guess the 3.5 are sources of replacement shields.

Your setup is all original. I recommend removing the pump and filter (replace the filter and hoses if you haven’t done so already). Also check the rubber buffers and replace if needed. Lastly, I would sand off all the rust/dirt from the shield and mounting braket and paint them so they are protected.
