Smile How do I centre a manual steering Box W110

I removed my manual steering box to replace the steering coupler bushings, but I didn't mark the splines on the steering shaft. How do I make sure I spline the shaft to the box in the correct splines?

Center the steering wheel perfectly and tie it in place temporarily. Center the steering box by turning it all the way one way, count the turns and come back exactly half way to dead center. Paint some reference marks for future. Couple the column to box. Couple the box to the steering linkage.

Set the toe adjustment. Once the toe is set the tie rods should be very similar in length with sufficient threads well into each adjusting sleeve. Each adjusting sleeve should have the same amount of thread into it from its respective inner and outer tie rods.

There may also be a factory locking/centering feature on the box, to determine that you'll need to refer to a factory manual.

Upon completion re-check all fasteners for tightness.

Good luck!!!

WK:

On the top of the steering box, left of centre, and a bit forward of centre, is a plug. It is both the fill plug, and the point at which a centreing pin is screwed in. The pin has a turned down section and a tapered tip. The pin can enter a hole in the pitman nut inside the steering box to ensure it is at the centre point.

Good luck!!!

This is amazing, but not surprising.
