Unhappy coolant coming out from front of engine

I was doing the weekly "stick my head under the car and look for leaks" when I noticed coolant coming out of my engine - specifically (sorry for the lack of knowledge about parts), from an area right behind the fan blade. Basically, if you look right behind the fan mounting, there's a metal thing screwed into the block. The coolant was coming, rather rapidly, out of the bottom of the that seal... or lack there of.

Water pump? Gasket? A new rainforest with an ecosystem based on coolant?

I topped off the coolant, ran the engine, and after a while it stopped leaking. Then later, it started again.

Thoughts?

Definetly replace the water pump. The seals usually don't start leaking on their own unless the pump itself is going/gone.

DON"T drive your car with a pump this bad, please.

They are easy to change and cheap to buy at the dealer. ONLY buy your pump from the dealer !!! They last a long time and are cheap.

If you are not handy with tools, this is still a project you can handle. You will need a 10mm wrench and a metric socket set (they are cheap nowadays), a stiff putty knife, and new coolant. I would also change the thermostat if it hasn't been changed in a while while you have it opened up.
Check the condition of your radiator caps' rubber ring. and change it also if needed or old...

Buy only Benz stuff for this if you can, as the dealer still supports these old cars. I don't mean to put down aftermarket stuff like the good people who run this wonderful forum, but for some reason the pumps provided aftermarket do not last very long and you have to do it again...

The problem with some of the aftermarket water pumps is that the clearance between the impellers and the housing is too big. Therefore it doesn't move as much coolant and causes overheating. A rebuilt pump for my 240D was about $26 from the dealer. Prices on water pumps for some models dropped to dirt cheap prices a few years ago. Definitely use an official MB part for this repair.

I'm leaving her in the gargage until I fix it - can someone post a walkthrough? I'd love to fix this myself!
