85,
Because the detergents in the oil are consumed and some of the oil polymerizes from the heat and in DIesel engines, the soot level increases beyond specifications. Then is time for new oil in the crankcase and the old oil can be used to power the Diesel engine. Its only going thru the engine one more time after going thru the engine thousands of lubrication cycles. And remember I filter it before I burn it. P E H |

You know what's scary, some new person is going to read this thread and actually run this junk through their engine. Having this oil in the crankcase is not the same as running it through the IP. Talk is cheap, but they should be aware that a rebuilt IP costs $800+ and takes about 5 hours to install. Using used oil may save you $5 in fuel and a trip to drop off the used oil. Anyone actually considering this should do the math for themselves. Even if the risk is small, it's not worth it.
Also, and I know some folks here don't care, this is hazardous waste that should be disposed of properly. Used motor oil contains significant contaminates (just read an used oil analysis), and burning it releases all these to the environment. Why do people think it's OK to release this into air, but they would never consider dumping it out on the ground? Even if you can't see it, it's still there. Diesel engines already have a reputation as being "dirty" due to the visible soot, this type of nonsense doesn't help. |

Why burn WMO?
Because for high miler frequent changers, a lot of time and space is wasted recycling oil. I change every 2500 miles and last time I went to the recycler, I took about 50 gallons (approx. 2 years worth, its amazing how many jugs you can collect in your shed before you run out of space). The way I look at it, I recycled $175.00 that I could have used in my car and could have avoided the PITA of loading it all up and taking it to the recycle center. I haven't done it yet, but view this as Biodiesel for the time constrained. I will, of course, filter it first and will let you guys know how it comes out. Most of the oil will be out of sparker engines however.

No thanks!

The fuel that you've used over that period of time (2 gallons per oil change, 25 changes total, 2500 miles between changes, 62500 miles, 20 mpg, 3125 gallons, $3 per gallon, $9375 for fuel, $175 being about 2% of your total fuel expenditures) vastly exceeds the trivial amount of movement you'd be able to get with that 50 gallon barrel of used motor oil. Clearly, based on that calculation, you are not hard up for money for fuel! Implementation of a filtration system itself probably would cost more than the value of the oil that you could burn! Risking my car for such trivial benefit? No thanks! (Unless I'm caught in the desert in Niger dying of thirst, as I've noted in my previous posts....)

Lets say I change the oil in my SDL twice a year. Thats 4 gallons of used oil. If I dumped said used oil in the tank I'd save a massive $12 per year.
Thats about what I will spend on lunch tomarrow. Or a bucket of balls at the driving range. No thanks not interested.

Aside from the obvious stupidity of burning this stuff, this is the part I don't get. If it's to much trouble to bring it to be recycled, why are you folks willing to spend the effort required to filter it? There is no economic benefit, it requires more work, and you are likely to end up with a parts car within a few years. Again, what's the point?

I'm lucky my dad brings the old oil to be recycled, but I can see how it would be a pita. If I had to do it myself I'd just have someone else do the oil change.
A garage down the street would probably do my SD for like $30.

Craig,
Why did U have to replace your IP? What went wrong with it? Did U burn used engine oil in your MB? P E H |

Actually, if you burned the engine oil you might still be using that injection pump.
I have a Chilton's manual for my 220D which recommends adding 1 quart of engine oil per tank in the summer to lubricate the injector pump. If you can filter out the nasty stuff, it kind of makes sense to me. If it lubricates my engine, it will lubricate my pump too. Just my .02. |
