Rust bubbles in the paint just make me feel like I have something growing out of my forearm

Whewww....reading this made me feel better about the holes in my floorboard! I just look at them as drains or possibly handy contraband exit points.

cool thread.......

I don't know if Mercedes have it as bad as the Toyota guys tho.

My Toyota rust repair thread:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=52541&highlight=Bj60+repainted

I had to replace lots of metal. Actually still in the progress.

Lots of fun.

The paint we are using to prevent the rust return is called POR-15. it is the best. Its a oxygen and moisture blocking paint. Non porous.

Cheers

I'm 15 for another month, and bought this bastard child last summer for $40 and a smile...

Ran, drove... Awesome... beat on it for 3 months, stole the radio, and sold it for $150 after putting around that into it total (oil, filter, plugs, wires, and gas)

Hows that?

I'm fairly new around here, just bought an '82 300D Turbo on eBay (it was local) that needs a new rear semi-trailing arm (I'm still looking for one that doesn't break the bank.) Anyway, before I bid on it I went over there to look at it in person, and I stuck my digicam under there to see what was wrong with the suspension, and to see if there was any other damage. I've attached 3 pics; 2 of the damaged trailing arm, and one of the other side, to see if it was an isolated problem or if the other side would likely go soon. Looks isolated to me. I did read in the records I got with the car that someone did some welding repair work on that same arm in 1995 for a rusted/broken shock mount. Seems like it was a bad part from day one if that is the case.

I'm in upstate NY, and there aren't very many cars of this vintage still on the road, which says a lot for the durability of the bodies on these cars.

Not sure if I would go as far as to say that sort of statement living in a place where cars see pretty nasty conditions and rust is a killer...and I would venture that the amount of the cars you see on the road has less to do with their "durability" and more to do with the owners ability/understanding of maintenence.

Danger:
Do NOT drive it; until that is replaced.

Since I am not set up for welding in my garage I put the front end back together and sprayed "Great Stuff" type foam into all the frame rails and open rusted tower areas. That was 2 months ago and my front end feels as strong as it ever did. I'm not sure what is holding it all together but it all works fine.

Expanding foam PROMOTES RUST.......

I had a Camaro in Chicago where the rear seat flooring was actually sort of a hammock formed by the carpeting (I drove around like this for quite some time before discovering this)

True story: The father of a friend of mine had a Rambler, just like my dad did. He was driving to work in Detroit one day when the car creaked and wasn't driving well. He pulled over to get out and see what happened. He couldn't - he had to climb out the window! The car had essentially broken in half and the doors were now supporting the weight between the wheels! Needless to day, the next destination for the car was the junkyard.

I spray rubberized underbody coating into/on exposed rust. That should slow it's progress until I have time to fix it properly. It also looks *slightly* better than brown flakes.
