210 E class wagon CD changer not working

Hi,

Just bought a 2001 E320 4matic wagon with 60k miles. Radio required code to be entered when I bought car. Everything works fine except CD changer. Radio displays message "No CD Changer."

Yet CD changer is powered properly (can insert and remove cartridge) but radio is not finding it apparently. Any ideas? Are there any common problems before I resort to removing device to check connectors? On that note, are special tools/ methods required to remove changer? Angled screw-driver?

Thanks in advance

Cd Changer

Open the compartment, there are three screws and the frame pulls up and out. In this frame there is the cd changer, your telaid, and the support for the cell phone if you got it. Check the connectors there will be power and the infrared link. I installed mine and it worked without any programming. The install sheet indicates that it should be programmed with the body computer at the dealer but if it worked there should be no season why it should not. I wonder why the radio had to be reset, dead battery?

I'll try to simplify as much as I can:
About the time the W203 (C Class) came out, MB switched to a slightly smaller CD Changer for ALL chassis, because they wanted to offer the glovebox mounted changer in the W203, but they only wanted to market 1 style of CD Changer.
They had the suspension in the CD Changer set to "Horizontal", as this is how it is mounted in the W203.
They came out with adapter brackets so the changer could also be used with the factory brackets on the other chassis, such as the W210 like yours. However, one thing that MUST be done is the CD Changer suspension orientation is changed to "Vertical", otherwise, believe it or not, you can actually end up with the "NO CD Changer" dispaly and so forth, no idea why it does this, but it does.
My other thought is that possibly the internal radio configuration wasn't changed to reflect the addition of the changer, the radio would need to be diagnosed with the SDS computer.
The CD changer can be removed with simple hand tools. Remove the bracket from the body first, disconnect the wiring, then the changer is removed from the bracket.

Thanks guys.

Gilly, I just bought the car from an auction. First thing radio did was emit a high pitched constant volume tone. Then it asked for the code. I imagine the battery died during the period in which the previous owner turned it in and my assumption of ownership.

Any idea why the system would need SDS diagnosis or why the changer orientation might be a variable for investigation at this point? Also, how do you change orientation? Is this a mechanical or electronic procedure?

Thanks again

Based on your complaint (NO CD CHANGER displayed on the radio), these are 2 possiblities that I've seen.
The suspension orientation is a physical adjustment, you need to remove the whole changer with bracket from the vehicle, then remove the changer from the bracket, and the 2 adjusters are on the side of the changer, easy to figure out how to change it, again it should be set on "V" (vertical). I know it doesn't sound like it would make a difference as far as an error at the radio head, but this CAN do this, and it took awhile before techs were accustomed to having to make this change to the cd changer. Nothing to lose by checking it.
Also, if a tech was in a rush when installing the cd changer (most if not all of these were installed at a dealership) they may not have taken the time to change the internal coding of the radio to reflect the addition of the cd changer (this is done with SDS), OR the SDS might have been being used at the time and they never got back to doing it, OR the salesman tried saving a few bucks and installed it himself and didn't know about changing the configuration, or a prior owner may have bought the parts and did it himself. The system WILL work without making this change, but nor reliably.

Need to access it through the rear hatch, open the panel on the right (passengers) side. Goes right up against the back wall of that area, there is a cut-out in the felt-ish insulation panel there that needs to be torn out, and once you do that you'll see the electrical and fiber optics connections. You do need to buy the bracket to mount it there.
