Unhappy Replacing Windshield

A piece of rock came up on my windshield a few months ago,
it was just a little cracki back then,
but it just split, i was wondering if anyone knows how much it cost to replace something like that.
How much does the dealership cost and how much for some place like Apple auto glass.

It would be alot easier to guess on the price if we knew what year/model you have.
At our dealer, it seems like usually we order the windshield and a auto glass installation company comes over to install it. Maybe some larger dealerships do their own installations

You could try fastlane or parts shop (in the row of icons on the top of the mercedes shop screen) and ask, I don't know if they sell windshields or not. Alternatively, ask your dealer for a price on just the glass. Then call a local glass installer and ask if they will quote a price if you provide the windshield. You could also ask what their price would be if they provide the glass and compare for the best price, although "their" windshield may not be OEM, but maybe you're not concerned about that.
My WAG on this is maybe between 300-500 dollars. My wife is in the insurance biz, she says that if you have comprehensive insurance, that you should just have to pay your deductible, and in some circumstances they will even waive the deductible (free).

I had to replace my windshield for inspection when I purchased my '87 W124 couple of months ago. Total cost was $321. You may want to check with your insurance first, it can be as low as $50 deductible, depending on your policy.

Can you not buy an insurance cover? Much cheaper in the long run. We pay about 10% premium of the insured value. Otherwise, its RM1,300 (kinda bout USD300) for an average windscreen with the MB logo.

windshield replacement

I received a rock chip to my windshield 3 weeks ago and was looking into replacing it. I also had heard about going the insurance route but decided against it for 1 reason. This is the most important - if you go with your insurance, then thats considered a claim and you rates might go up if you have had another claim within the past 5 years no matter if it was your fault or not. I've decided to wait until the crack gets worst then replace it. If it is repairable then the insurance company would waive the deductable. The windshield would cost me here in SoCal around $300 or so for oem. If I go with another german window maker then the cost would be around $180. jmho

I just re-installed my windshield and back window after a total paint and 25 yr old seals. Followed the MB shop manual and consulted with mechs (for beers) My girlfriend and I had both windows in in about 90min. You have to remove all the chrome trim. I will admit I am more adventurous than most.

I phoned up some aftermarket places, like Speedy and Apple Auto Glass, seems like if i get it from them, it is half the price.

Woudl there be a difference from OEM and aftermarket??

In response to your question about insurance, I've had many windshields replaced over the years, even had a bad streak of 3 in one year, and always placed a claim with my insurance company without incident.

Now, I just may be lucky, but I've found that insurance companies deal with windshield claims differently.

By the way, nowadays they try to push you towards repair rather than replacement if possible. That initial chip was ripe for repair, which is very inexpensive.

Good luck!

oasis100,
As far as after market vs OEM windshield, it depends how long you want to keep the car and how much you care. On the other hand, a windshield will be and can be broken the very next day you have one installed. So, ask yourself what is more important to you -- an OEM windshield or money in the bank? Utimately the decision is your, advises, of course, is always ours.
