Hot slicone-wax application?

I was speaking to a classic car dealer in Az recently and he mentioned a sprayed silicone product that was commonly used out there to provide UV protect and restore shine. Basically, it sounded like some sort of hot-wax treatment for older cars.

I didn't inquire too deeply because it seemed like something that would be easy to find but I've had no luck out here in the northeast. Does it ring any bells for anyone? If so, how would it compare to a clearcoat application in terms of cost and longevity?

More Info

Well, I've done a bit more reading and I'm pretty sure what he was talking about was a Teflon application. The reason I'm so curious is that I'm concerned that my car (approaching 15 years old) has thin spots in places. It was obviously well 'loved' and maintained, there are no swirls or dings but in a few spots the paint has a very smooth 'glassy' look to it which makes me worry that it might be close to wearing through.

Of the various protective measures for old paint is there a product or approach that stands out the best as a way of 'thickening' the outer layer? Or should I be looking for the best price on a new clear coat?

Tim

Teflon treatment won't add anything to the outer layer of your car.

If your concerned about the depth of your clear coat, give a call to a few high end detail shops in your area and find out if they have a method of measuring the clear coat. There is optical equipment that will take measurements and give you depth in inches or mm. Measure different panels on your car and you'll immediately find the thin spots.

Remember, if your paint is shiny then most likely you have clear coat remaining and as long as you don't use any abrasives on the paint you shouldn't have to worry about wearing it off.

Thanks for the info. I'd heard of the Optical measuring tool, maybe I'll go ahead and get that done just for piece of mind. Do you think there is any value to the Teflon treatment then or should I just stick with polymers?

Also, when you say abrasives, would that include waxing and buffing?

Teflon is only worth applying if you don't wax your car regularly. It will help protect the finish and keep it looking decent. It doesn't really give you the same shine and depth that a good wax will so in my opinion it's only for those that don' thave time for proper maintenance.

As far as abrasives go, waxes (Carnauba or Polymers) are not abrasive. Light Swirl removers (Meguiars #9, 3M) for the most part if applied by hand are also not abrasive, they just fill the swirls.

Polishes can be abrasive and the degrees of abrasives will vary. Some are so mild they barely remove anything (used for heavier swirls and light oxidation), others will cut into the clear coat very easily and should be used carefully.

thanks again

That's all great information, I appreciate it. I've never maintained a paint job this old so I want to be sure to do it right. Its definately better to ask all the stupid questions before I mess anything up.

No such thing as a stupid question, you have to start somewhere.

Good luck with the new Benz!
