Headlight switch pilot light

In my headlight switch is the pilot light. I've never been able to determine in either my 85 300SD or my 83 300D what causes this light to light. Does anyone know if this light is intended to come on in these models or is this light reserved for some other function in other models? I've checked the light in both cars and they are good. In other cars I've looked at, I've never seen one come on either. What the heck is this light for and what could be causing it to not light when the fogs are switched on (if that's what it's for)?

It comes on when it's pulled out to the second click to activate the rear fogs. Since most of us don't have rear fogs, we don't have to option to pull it out to the second click. I have seen it work on a grey market car, though.

rear fogs, you say??? Those must be the spare holes on the inside of the rear lenses. I'm planning to parallel my brake lights and put another set of sockets and bulbs in those holes.
Thanks for the info. I'll stop testing those bulbs now.

NOW I know what that is...
I can't tell if my car is a Euro or not,
the vin implys so, but it has the evil servo...
BUT, the headlight does pull out 2 clicks for fog, and the light comes on. I now will have to check if I put bulbs in there if I have rear fogs. Cool.
I wonder if I can get pulled over for rear fogs.....

My old 72 280SE 3.5 had a single rear fog light. It was not built into the existing rear lens assembly but was externally mounted to the bumper.

In Germany that was a life saver because it would get so foggy on some of those roads that the rear foglight was the only way someone could see you in front of them.

I've seen other european cars here in the states with the rear fog light, so I don't think it's illegal and, it may save your car!!

My rear fog works and I plan on installing some "rear countermeasures". Put another bulb in on the right, so I can pull the switch out and make it look like I spiked the brakes to spook tailgators w/o actually hitting my brakes .
It's not ever that foggy around here anyway...
