Just got back from a long distance trip in the TD. Eased off the line from stops, kept my distance from the cars in front of me so I could plan my stops using very little brake, ran no more than 70mph, and generally tried to be very light on the accelarator. It paid off....an incredible 31.9 MPG.

I normally get 28 so I saw a difference just being easy on the pedal. I guess keeping my air filter clean also helps but I always did that anyway.

Cheers,

Bill

I've never had it actually checked but am assuming so. Tires are the correct size and I have checked the mileage markers along the highway and everything so far as the odometer/tripometer seems to be ok.

Speedo seems ok as well. When I'm going 65 MPH in a 55 the rice burners are passing me so I think thats fine.

very few cars on the road helped as well. didn't run the A/C and the windows were only cracked. Roof was open though.

I didn't take nearly the amount of tools and other stuff that I usually carry. Traveled very light with only our clothes and a minimal amount of tools.

Best mileage I've ever gotten from the TD.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill, I've seen 29 mpg when I was up to your place in the W123.....where it was mostly highway miles with no mountains. But I usually see 26 mpg combined city/highway. Or highway miles with mountains.

Great point...thats something I left out of the equation. I was traveling mostly on perfectly flat ground on the Eastern shore of Md./del/Va.

I've noticed the mileage can differ from car to car. The first wagon I had got in the 23-26 MPG range. The second one was better. Usually around 26-28 MPG. The one I've got now is always around 28. I was making a concerted effort to drive like I was almost out of fuel.

The new free 240 gets 34.7 out on the road and around here anywhere from 31 to as much as 33.4 You sure have to run them hard though just to get it to move. I drive that car like a loaded tractor-trailer.

Cheers,

Bill

I had 30.56mpg coming back from Houston two weeks ago in the SD. I ran 70mph (~67 on the speedo with taller tires), 2.88:1 gears, and a full tank of fuel filled slowly. 35psi rear/30psi front.

This was with no AC windows open half the way and closed the other half.

It's very possible to do 30mpg if you don't drive very fast in these vehicles. I could care less if people pass me on the free, I have no place to go in a rush as I leave in plenty of time and do not feel like dealing with the local law enforcement either.

I know my speedo is dead-on accurate at 80 MPH. I've even got an officially sanctioned endorsement from the Commonwealth of Virginia to prove it. It only cost me $210 and a couple of points to get it.

Around here they will lie to you about the speed they clocked you doing (assuming they even got a speed on their radar!)

I wasn't awake that motorcycle cops could radar though semi-tractor trailers.....hmmmm....

My trip consisted of no more than an hour on the highway where speeds were 70 for only about 15 minutes and the rest of the time at 60.

The other 3 hours were spent on rural main roads with little traffic and few stops. My speed in those areas was no more than 55 in most places.

Once again, the terrain was flat for much of the trip.

Cheers,

Bill

The TD is an '85.

The 240 an '83.

TD has 155k and the 240 222k.

The ALDA has never been touched in the TD while the 240's has.

Cheers,

Bill

another tip

replace the injector return lines, especially if they sweat fuel.
