At how many miles did your odometer stop functioning properly?

My 82 300TD has 143k diplayed on the odometer. But the I bought it and drove it home it stopped working for several miles and then started working again, and has been working on and off for a couple of months now. Classic old Benz pain in the rear. I know, and it's is being tended to. The previous owner said it hadn't done this to him. I am wondering if it was a oddity that it started with me, or if the PO wasn't paying attention to the odometer. At how many miles did your odometer stop working properly? Then mechanic tells me the motor is in great shape so I don't think mine has gone too many more than the displayed 143k.

Thanks
Andrew

You are right on target for that style VDO -- the 72 220D quit at 145000, the 72 280 SE at 165,000, and my brother's 75 300D at about 150,000.

Easy fix, do a search.

The problem is that the trip odometer starts dragging and stops the main odometer. There are plenty of threads here describing how to take apart the speedometer to correct this. Just do a search and you will get more info than you ever wanted.

Good luck,

I'm wondering, is the failed odometer thing subjected mostly to MBZ's older than 1985?

Only my 80 450 SL has a failed odometer (178K) speedo works fine. My 190E and 87 300D are functional, except I did have to replace the cable in the 300D and even with that new cable it still has a severely bouncing needle, but has no kinks in the run?

345,000 and counting on one... 231,000 on the other... I've been told that often the problem is resetting the trip odometer while driving. You only do it when stopped. I don't know how accurate this is, though.

That might be true. It seemed that no sooner after 0-ing the odometer while driving one time, the odometer stopped working for me. It was just a little after 222K.

My 88 300E stopped at 154k miles. It cost me $140 to fix includes removing and reinstall.
