If you get to DC before 9:00 am or so you can always find a street very near the museums with a meter - meters are free on the weekends.

so dabenz, where does your temp guage sit normally when your cruising. Mine used to be just above the 175, but lately in about 80 degree weather doing about 70-75, it's usually half way between 175 and the next little line. I usually don't let it get above the next little line if I can help it.

Your Gettysburg visit

How much of a gettysburg fan are you? Have you done some reading? Do you already know the battle, or are you beginning your study of that battle?
The Turner movie is not a terrible place to start, but there is so much more.
One of my favorite reads was done by a "neighbor" of yours, a Wisconsin fellow who was an aide to Union general Gibbon 2nd Corps, which occupied the center of the Union line and was the aiming point for Picketts charge. In the preface to his account he confesses that he can only tell what he saw. Becasue he didn't write about someone else, do not assume that wasn't important. How true! There was so much going on over those 3 days, I doubt that anyone will ever, can ever fully understand it all. There is a lot to be gained from reading, but there is a feeling of the vastness of the actual battle field that I can only appreciate by being there. How do you exercise command over 70,000 or so tropps scattered over that distance without radio?
Maybe we should start a "Visit Gettysburg" thread over on the "open discussion".

willlyons: from your first post you'll be reading this on the road or when you get home. The center of the temp gage needle rides the top edge of the 175 tick mark. If I do the big hills right then it won't move and the oil pressure gage needle will stay pegged high. Keep in mind I'm old school and still use the 60/80 rule. If the needle creeps up to where I can see space between the bottom of the needle and the top of the 175 tick mark then I either have too many bugs on the bug screen or it's too hot for the bug screen (home made from metal window screen, attached to front of grill).

Attached is scan from the owner's manual. I don't know what the extra marks mean on the fuel gage, either.

" I have a damn fahrenheit guage with 2 unidentified lines and I don't know what the temps are on it. I only have 100, 175, and 250. As far as I know, 175 isn't and has never been half way between 100 and 250. go figure. "

Do NOT listen to any of the advise you have seen in this thread... you live in a different Universe than any of us.... in OUR Universe we count 75 up from 100 as the same as from 175 to 250... think about it... 25 to 200 and then add 50.... to get 75... pretty much the DEFINITION of HALF WAY....

I know you may have already done this...but I would drive it till it got to that mark..hop out with an IR temp probe see what it is as drive till it hits the next mark do the same thing..and when its up to full operating temp hop out and see how accurate the guage is....just for grins...

Well I am out here in PA Drove over 575 miles almost nonstop (a couple brief rest stops...but otherwise straight through) and it went smooth....except for a vibration around 70mph....I think my front tires are out of balance.... Its not bad so I will have it looked into when I come back....

I'm going to also have to replace my fuel filters....the car seems a bit less peppy on the freeway than before, it can still make it to/hold 70-80 ok but it won't rev as high when doing a floor-it take off as it was before....the primary looks kinda dirty...so I'll have to do that when I come back as well....otherwise it runs perfectly.

Its so nice out here in PA I'm here at a KOA in the woods typing from my cabin! I did have to drive 17 miles to reach a Sunoco with diesel though Tomorrow morning we depart for the zoo/park in Washington DC....gettysburg was wonderful....the town is beautiful and we toured the battlefield today for about 5 hours, I've attached some pictures below of the scenery from earlier today....this picture was taken standing on the eternal flame peace monument....

leathermang: yes indeed, 175 is halfway between 100 and 250, but mother taught me to be polite. I get the Aflac duck/Yogi Berra response when I tell people that I fuel up when the fuel gauge gets to 2/4, and then a big smile when they see the gauge. 2/4 is exactly....

boneheaddoctor: tried that but my brain cells aren't big enough to correlate the non-linear gauge marks to non-linear time response of the changing temperature of coolant conducting through metal or rubber. daBenz hasn't seen the needle hit the mark above 175, so it was only a two mark test. Thermostat isn't fully open at the mark below 175 so directly using the radiator coolant doesn't work either, as that would only be a test at the 175 mark.

I posted the question in the Vintage section; maybe somebody there knows what the marks mean.

Isn't Gettysburg just beautiful this time of year? It is hard to imagin the magnitude of what took place their. Pickets charge alone ended an era of warfare.

I think it would be cool to go back in July. This year one of my friends will be fighting as a Yank. Last year he was a Reb.

A few notes to help you while in the DC area, since I live near Millersville: 1. The traffic on RT50 west into DC is terrible in the AM(7-9AM) and bad getting out of DC heading east to Millersville 3-6:30pm. 2. In the AM head RT50 west to DC, when you are past the beltway(I95)(15mi), get in the right lane (AFTER the beltway-I95 !) and pull into the Metro lot, leave your car there and take the Metro(subway) into DC. Easy to use, faster, and you will love it. Just don't leave anything in the car in the parking lot where people can look in and see it . 3. Go to Annapolis for Dinner and a few bars near the water. Check out the USNA, also. 4.If possible, go East on 50 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Kent Narrows for great seafood restaurants (1/2 hr drive) from Millersville. 5. Finally, my indy's phone number in case you have car problems-Island Imports, Steve, 888-624-3242,410-604-3242. Good Luck.

115 dash

the 115 dash panel is very sensitive to ground. if ground is not excellent the guages will flip and flop willy nilly. ( i learned those precise engineering terms in college).

Tick Marks on Gauges is the gauge question in the Vintage section. Temperature gauge is still a mystery, I guess.
