Cetane boost= mileage boost??

I have been running power service fuel conditioner, and seem to notice a bump in fuel economy when I use it. Has any one else noticed such a event? Or am I dreaming?

Hey, well, you just may be getting better mileage. I've noticed that when I run an additive, the car runs and sounds smoother.

Yep, it also seems to run slightly better.

According to a table on the effects of fuel properties on engine performance in a published diesel engine manual (3rd edition), increasing the cetane number affects the engine in the following ways:

1. Starting Improves
2. Lubrication Improves (presumably injection components, not engine)
3. Smoke Decreases
4. Exhaust odor Decreases
5. Power output not affected
6. It says fuel consumption is related, presumably decreases as cetane increases, as per your results.
7. Increases combustion chamber deposits.

So, basically, it gives you a great deal of advantages but the tradeoff is more combustion chamber fouling.

I have run both Power Service's 4 and 6, and RedLine diesel fuel additive and find RedLine to quiet and smooth my 603 better than Power Services.

I pick up about 3 mpg

I get 24.8 w/out and 28.6 w/ either type,it does however run much smoother w/ it.W/ some coaxing from a fellow 617 owner who I thought was fos I also added the marvel mystery oil to my engine last oil change for the first time and man what a difference in vibration and noise. works for me...

You added it right to the engine oil? I've always been afraid to add anything to the oil because of how it could interact with the already present additives in the oil....I don't think I'll ever mix anything in the oil itself, but I have run lots of Mystery oil through the fuel and it did make quite a difference....now that I am on B20 though its smooth anyways so I don't really need it.

I have added 8 oz.Power Service with each fill up and can attest to the fact that I get better milage about 2 to the gallon. Engine runs soother and quieter as well. I buy the 96 oz. jug and keep it and an 8 oz. container in the trunk for each fill up.Use it all year round
Cheapest at Wal Mart.

Tried that too. Didn't see any real difference with or without.

JD, I'm not sure, that's what is says in the book. It's one of the better known publications on diesel engines in general, and it has a good-sized section on different fuel properties and their effects (including cetane number), and it says that combustion chamber deposits increase as cetane number increases. That is the only disadvantage, however.

The book is: Troubleshooting and Repairing Diesel Engines: 3rd Edition by Paul Dempsey.

When I had an 85 GMC Surburban with the 6.2L diesel, I always used fuel additive. It helped with starting, and milage (would average 20 mpg), not sure about idle, and other claims above. Have not tried it in the 87 Turbo Diesel, yet. Might try it.
