I was the original poster, so I'll tell you what I did but first let me tell you what the problem really was. The problem was the fuse. Even though I replaced it and rotated the fuse while in the connectors, it still wasn't getting a good connection. So, use a Haynes book or something similar, find out which fuse controls the windows and change it and rotate it around in the clips a lot, enough to even be a little scrapy on the connectors.

Now for the relay. The instrument cluster is just that, the gauge cluster with the speedo/tach oil pressure and clock. This can be pulled forward toward the steering wheel by sticking something, like a coat hanger end or something even thinner and flatter, under the black ruber trim around it and pulling it forward. You don't need to unplug any of the gauges to reach the relay but be very careful and take your time. Use a flashlight and shine it back there and you will see a solitary cube about an inch and a half square sitting right in front of the steering wheel. Change that part. It is referenced above with a link to the fastlane part number. Mine was fine, but I left it changed anyway.

Good luck. I'm a bad mechanic myself but this really is easy. Just check your fuses first.

still no luck

Hey guys,

so last night i took apart both switches and cleaned them very well.
this morning after i read the reply(ty orkrist2) i took out the spare fuses i put in yesterday and wire brushed them. as well as the connectors. still i have both windows down
I have pryed the instrument cluster forward, however the is heavy resistance, so im afraid to pull it forward far enough to see anything. also wil li need to remove the steering wheel to replace this relay?

another problem that i belive is a spawn from this one, somewhere along the line when i was messing with the wires in the middle console and under the dash on both sides of the car i must have knocked something loose, cause now the only meter that works in my instrument cluster is my speedometer. anysuggestions?

I doubt anything in the middle cluster will affect the gauges. They run from the gauge cluster forward. You do not need to remove the steering wheel. Its a tight fit but it should be OK. I can't remember how much resistance there was for me with the cluster, but I do remember taking it very slowly and just inching it out. When you tried to pull the cluster out, you may have just pulled the connections a little, causing them not to work. I think that happenned to me with the tach, but I just made sure everything was connected before I put it all back in for the last time.

If you feel unsure, have a shop look at it. The console should come out though without any damage to anything. Tyhere is enough cable in the connections to the gauges to allow you to reach your hand back there and replace the relay.

well ty for your help, i will pull it out some more so i can see where this " relay" is.
Im haveing quite the time finding the part anywhere though.
Its seems this relay also controls the heat motors and the ac system. Is it called the Window relay or a Multi Purpose Relay?

update
i have pulled out the instrument cluster, and have located ontop of the steeringwheel a small 3/4" silver cube. I assume this is the relay were are talking about. However no parts store has any earthly idea what im talking about when i say window relay. im going to go get a haynes manual today to make sure this is what i need.

Just call fastlane dude. I'll see if I can find the part.

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1TA00URFV1UT0434EQ&year=1984&make=MB&model=300-DT-001&category=P&part=Voltage+Relay

I think this is the part-call fastlane to confirm it though.

ahh man

Well heres an update at where i am.
I was able to locate the small silver cube behind the instrument panel. i took the part number and called a local parts store. The cross-referenced the part and were able to have it at their store this morning. I got the part, which was not black like the picture you linked me or what you described, however it looked exactly like the one i pulled out, which was right above the steering colum so i think its the right on. There are no other cubes back there.. so i went and swappedthe new one with mine......nothing happened.
I thought it was a voltage relay too, however mercedes dealership stated it was not the voltage relay but just a "relay" and that it was different than the voltage relay. I returned the part i bought this morning figuring it was not the problem.
when i gave an online store the part number, they to stated it wasa just a relay this is the link to what they said it was
javascript:showImage('Relay','http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/P202025016HEL.JPG',0)......i cant get it to paste as a link ...srry =)
also here is the orginal mercedes part number: 0015420219
I checked all the wires behind the instrument cluster and they were all connected. So im not sure what i knocked loose. Im afraid i have tried what i can to fix the problem, short of buying new fuses, the spares looked good, but its the last thing im gonna try before i drop it off at a mechanics on Monday. I do apperciate your help though.
You stated it was your fuses?? what did you do to figure that out? all the fuses look like they are making good connection. hmmm o well. again thank you for your help.

what happened!

Well just thought i would stop in and update the problem i had. It turns out it was not the power relay, or the fuses. The wires that go into the fuse box had come loose. And thats all it really was. i ended up taking it to a mechanic, but i tried! Well thank you very much for all your help in the matter.
