The regular carburated gassers were phased out in April of 1980. The fuel-injected M102's had better gas mileage and ran smoother than the carb ones. In fact, these W123 M102's were basically the same as the (W201) 190E's M102 block and design.

i recon about 5 to 1 w123s here in the uk are gassers, much harder to find w123 diesels especially good ones. my friend has a 230e and loves it

Yes you are correct...some of my friends from Germany and Norway also tell me that they would love to find nice W123 diesel wagons, coupes, or sedans - especially w/ the turbodiesel in the wagon... but they seldom see any good examples on the road (or for sale!).
