The problem is this Mercedes recommendation is over 20 years old. Up to 1982 they recommended 10W-20 engine oil, and starting in 1983 they recommended ATF. Today's ATF is nothing like the one from 20 years ago. So the logical choice is a fluid specifically designed for manual transmissions. MTL makes sense and that's what I use.

Yes, ATF has changed.

Just to chime in with a side opinion, these transmissions probably shouldn't be shifted quickly - that is - trying to shift between first and second (or other gear combinations) as fast as possible. When you do that you are not allowing the synchronizers to do their job, and even if they do you are stressing the system more than required.

When you jam the gear shift stick from one gear to the next, it causes unnecessary wear to some internal transmission components.

Just do normal "old-man" shifts.

(spoken by an old man. )

I thought my car needed a new 3rd gear synchronizer when I bought it. When I changed the gear lube it appeared to have heavy weight oil in it. I changed over to ATF Type A and the trans shifts much better.
