Veggie Oil Helped Me through Katrina

Thanks for all of the info on this site about veggie oil.

We have had fuel lines here that average a 3 hour wait since the day after Katrina hit. I got in touch with medmech by cellphone and he researched the veggie oil option for me here and I have not had to wait in one fuel line. Also, the oil I found was .$75 cheaper per gallon than diesel.

Things are getting closer to normal today, so I probably only burned 1/2 tank, but I was very popular--not having to worry about fuel and zipping around making deliveries and running errands for stranded friends.

Thanks for all of the info!!!!

Glad you are safe. We were all worried about you.

Is it true your exhaust smells like french fries?

Thanks for the concern. We made it--some we knew didn't.

The exhaust smells funny, but not like french fries . I probably had 75:25 Veggie to diesel and I added about 1/2 quart of motor oil.

Why did you add the motor oil? Was it fresh or used?

It was unused. I added it because my resident expert told me that the oil was recommended to lubricate the injectors. I have a 23.5 gal tank and probably added 1/2 qt. to 10 gallons of vegitable oil.

Thanks to all for the good wishes, btw We were very fortunate.

Aklim, re: time. My time is worth approximately $XXX.XX/hour. Last week, 3 hours was a short wait for fuel in my area. By going to a grocery and buying vegitable oil, I made quite a bit of money!

Your resident expert apparently doesn't know that cooking oil and biodiesel have significantly higher lubricity than straight diesel.

At that rate, I would run it too except I am not sure how my 99 E300 will take it. Usually the longest wait for me is about 15 mins because I fill up, get a soda, flirt with the pretty girl.

It doesn't take much (<20% WVO) to make the exhaust different. I always think mine smells like a hot skillet

Nar- glad you're OK. Let us know if you need anything.

Dumb question here but.....is it really getting better? The media says it is and the water is receding it appears but I just wondered from your perspective if it really is getting better down there.

We're all thinking of you and you're in our prayers....

Cheers,

Bill

It is really getting better. New Orleans is getting pumped out and the problem now is with sewerage, dead bodies, ect....leading to disease. If they don't get the natural gas cut off, the whole city will burn--it is burning like hell right now.

In Mississippi, things are going pretty well because the victims were wealthier, able to leave, have money to stay away, ect....

No doubt about it though--everyone is walking around in a daze. It is just surreal.

I know all about shock....I watched my minimally insured business of 30 years burn to the ground right before my eyes a couple weeks ago and was walking around dazed and confused for about a week. I can't imagine going through what you all have been through. The smell alone has got to be horrific.

Glad to hear of progress being made and hope you all come back from this disaster very soon, although i do realize it'll take years to fully recover.

Cheers,

Bill

It's good to hear you are OK. I have many music friends there and and have heard alot of moving stories.

I produce a music festival twice a year at my ranch in north Texas. We have decided that the proceeds of the festival this fall will benefit the American Red Cross.
I hope to see a few MBs there.

Take care.

Why does everyone care about what the exhaust smells like? Not trying to be rediculous but unless I am planning to commit suicide with the exhaust, I am barely able to smell whether it is diesel or gas when I pull up the car into my garage and then close the door and get out of the car. Even if it does smell like lilacs, the exhaust pipe is pointing out the rear and I won't be able to smell it while driving unless I pipe it into the cabin. So once again, what is the difference what it smells like? I'd rather be smelling gas exhaust than diesel if I had to choose but personally, I would rather not smell either. Until I hear people talk about it, I have never given a thought to what the exhaust smells like since I am not sniffing it for the most part.

I know when I start my 300D in the mornin, and I smell the veggie oil it smells pleasing because I get a solid reminder that I am not paying $299.9 a gallon for diesel, and that I am not polluting the air, and the dpeleting the earths natural oil reserves as much as if I was burning diesel or petro....
As far as what it smells like, I'm a vegetarian, so as long as it's not fried meat, I am even happier to smell the soybean oil.

and btw Narwahl glad to hear you're still truckin'....

I brought the Isuzu diesel out of the garage to aid a friend who did not have the forsight to fuel his Z71 4x4. The zuzu didn't have but 1/2 tank so we topped of with some Kroger Vegi -the looks on peoples faces was priceless when we topped off in the parking lot.
