If you topped off with Diesel you will be OK. However if it were me the station owner would have sweated through some serious future diesel credits. Got to love Oregon and not being able to pump your own fuel.

In really cold situations MB says you can put up to 30 percent gasoline mixed into the tank...
So that little amount is nothing...
You did not even need to add the oil...

Had the same thing happen to my Ford Powerstroke. Didn't think of using motor oil.... ..... I think that is a great idea. My tank was virtually empty, when approx. 1.5 gal of gas was introducted to the tank. We filled remainder of tank with diesel and everything was fine. If it were mine I would add the qt. of motor oil and top off tank w/ diesel.

My manual says kerosene, not gasoline. If that happened to me, I'd definitely want to add a lubricant like motor oil or ATF, especially if I had nothing but petroleum diesel to cut the gasoline with.

Why does everybody keep spouting that line over and over again? When that was written the lubricity of diesel fuel was a couple orders of magnitude higher than it is today. Diesel has dramatically changed in the last 20 years and those guidelines are just no longer relevant.

the station manager offered to pump the fuel back out for me but it would have delayed me an hour or more .well I drove 30 miles to get home and seemed to run well.I just read that atf thread and I think I will add a qt of that to it this morning.

Hrm, could these cars be run on used, filtered motor oil? It'd probably stink like crazy, but it sounds like it would run on it.

Not that I'd try it anytime soon.. but if you can just pour a quart of oil into the tank, it must be able to run on it to some extent, right?

"My manual says kerosene, not gasoline. "--Old300D

Maybe you need to read further in your manual.

Owner's Manual
Emmission Systems and Maintenance --1980

Page 23

Depending on the temperature, add a certain quantity of kerosene if only summer diesel fuels or less cold resistant winter diesel fuels are available or it the temperatures drop below -16C/+3 F.
If regular grade gasoline does have to be added, its proportion should not exceed 30%. Premium fuels are not to be used.
Engine Power may drop according to the proportion of supplementary fuel. For this reason, keep the percentage of fuel added to the minimum necessitated by the ambient temperature. Even at ambient temperatures of less than -22C/-8F the proportion of supplementary fuel must not exceed 50%.

What year did they stop putting that in the manual 84 or 85. That was discussed once.

Was it changed due to the instructions for the prior years changing ... or it did not apply to the new cars the new instructions came with ... or did global warming make the low temperature instructions unnecessary ? LOL
I have not seen that discussion...

My 1982 manual does not include any reference to using RUG.

Nor does my '83. Maybe it has something to do with the low lubricity of diesel fuel to begin with, and Mercedes didn't want to keep repairing injection pumps from gasoline damage?

So lets take a logical look at what has been said....

The MB manual specifies some very cold weather for use of gasoline.... at which.... THAT is the recommendation to KEEP YOUR FUEL FROM JELLING IN YOUR TANK AND YOU FROM FREEZING OUT BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.. is the way I read it... does that make sense... ?

How many times can you drive up to a service station and GET KEROSENE ?

None that I know of.... I have to go to my local hardware store... and have to search hard to find one which carries it in bulk... instead of just one gallon cans... ever priced Kerosene in the one gallon cans.... and typically they only carry the de-smelled one.. which costs even more...

And while the lubricity has changed... does that mean NO GASOLINE can be used to get you HOME.... or does it just change the max percentage permissible ?

Took my manual from the 85 into resturaunt today during lunch Looks like after the introduction of the trap oxidizer (85) the gas goes away, with a precaution of damaging the T.O. Kerosene OK to 50% with NO. 1 Diesel only and they give a little temerature, mixture ratio chart.

Greg - we have Kero at the pumps at a few places. Same places have red diesel also
