Body Damage...easily fixable? (With pics)
My buddy has a 1983 240D that was recently hit by something, he isnt sure what. The rear window was completely shattered away, and there is damage to the middle of the left C-pillar, but nothing down on the quarter panel...had to be some kind of truck or something. He was not able to find out any information about who did it or what really happened. The major issue is the frame that holds the rear window is pretty bent, to a point where a new window can't just be thrown in there. He wants to sell the car, but doesn't want to put a couple thousand dollars into this repair only to sell it for 1500 or so. From the pictures, can you folks tell if this is something that can be fixed relatviely easily, just to get a window to go in, so he can sell the car? Or will getting a window in there require completely repairing the C-pillar? I was getting ready to buy the car when this happened, now I'm concerned it'll have to be parted out if the repairs are cost prohibitive. Thanks for any advice!

What bad luck. It shouldn't be too expensive to bang it out, but you need a new rear windshield and liner. This should make the car worth much less in my opinion. Maybe $750 less.

The pictures almost look like the damage was done with an aluminum soft ball bat. Good body man should be able to fix it.

I have to agree with JRB, here. The damage to that area definately doesn't seem like it was caused by another vehicle or rock. The indentations on the C-pillar is about the right shape of a baseball bat. Maybe you can use a pry-bar to get the body back into the right shape, followed by either serious bondo, or an expensive trip to a body shop. :\

i would bet that
that car is a total loss by insurance standards. if so by their standards it is worth .10 on the dollar of its undamaged value.
get a repair estimate by a reputable shop before buying. tom w

We were thinking baseball bat as well, but I would have thought it would take a serious blow to bend the body like that, as well as a few serious blows to shatter the entire rear windshield. There is also damage up higher on the C-pillar. There were a bunch of chunks of broken up concrete in the street as well, dont know if they were related.
So it doesn't look like there is an easy way out of this one then, just to get a window back in the hole.... |
