Question regarding Veg Oil added to Diesel Fuel

• Will it harm anything if I add about a quart of veg. oil to full tank to diesel?
• Do I need to do anything special regarding fuel filters if I did add VO?
• Will it quiet engine/Improve performance in any way?

At the top of the page is a sticky that regards WVO use. One quart to a full tank of diesel wouldn't do any harm but I'd check your filters just be to sure. Depending on where you live, it might not be good to add a whole lot more if it gets cold. I'm not a blender because its my preference to run a separate, heated system. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with blending, I just prefer the heated, dual tank system. I think one quart might make it run a bit quieter but I'm not sure. I'm sure a blender will chime in soon.

You're better off adding it to an empty tank, so it will mix better when adding the diesel.

Nope, off the shelf food grade (non hydrogenated) oil is plenty clean and filtered. I don't think it's going to break much lose either.

Never ran less than 50% so I'm not sure if you'll hear a difference. But the addition of 1% VO will add enough extra lubrisity.

Why do you want to do this. There are many good lubricity additives that are designed to be used with diesel fuel. Putting a quart of veggie really does nothing except maybe make you feel better?

Good point. If you're doing this to experiment with using WVO, there's much better ways to go about it. If you're looking to improve the quality of your fuel, there's much better things to add, things that'll lubricate and lower your cold pour point.

I agree with Diesel Giant. I tried adding a gallon of VO once to my 87 300D. The only thing it did was to make the engine knock more when it was cold. I've also read reports of waxes coating the entire fuel system from a diesel/VO blend. Some people have had good results with running a gasoline/VO mix. Personally, I stay away from VO and prefer biodiesel or real diesel additives instead.

Geographic location please?
What type of Vegetable Oil are you planning to run Waste (WVO) or Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO)?

WVO needs special filtration, and possibly other treatment before it can be used.

If you are in an area below 40F at night the answer is do not do it, it can turn to a jello or lard consistency inside your fuel system.

If you are above 40F at night it will not hurt in most cases; but, if the fuel system is contaminated with fungus do NOT use it, treat the system with biocide, replace filters as needed, and/or clean the fuel tank, then try it above 40F...
Remember to carry extra filters, and the tools to change them on the road.

Update on my WVO/Diesel blends

All summer I was running 50/50 mix of wvo/diesel. I had no problems whatsoever. However, I was very picky about my WVO. I would filter it through a pillowcase and only choose the good looking stuff. I would bring it home and let it settle for a few days and only use the stuff off the top. It depends on your climate. No matter what your mix always carry a spare filter.

B20 Blend

I run a 20% mix of filtered WVO in with my regular diesel. No problems to report other than my cravings for fried food everytime I go somewhere....

So do you all think 50/50 blend would be OK in South Florida? I may try it...Never freezes here.

I am in SO. FL too and you can run on 50/50 or 20/80 too if you want. But it is better to not blend Diesel with WVO cause it causes wax to come out of the diesel, and clog your fuel lines and IP.
SO better to try 20/80 with RUG/ WVO, then add 2oz per 5 gallons of Power Service cetene boost; 1-2 oz of acetone; and 1 oz of StarTron Diesel additive...from Marine supply stores..... That's what I use here and it works great.

Have there been any complications from using RUG and WVO in the MB? Any waxy build ups? or clogged IPs? I guess the RUG just ups the octane levels of the WVO and changes the viscosity as well...How many miles have you put into this 20/80 RUG Blend...? Thanks

Austin,

I mixed 3 jars of wvo/diesel and let them sit out in the yard. The highest ratio I had was 50/50. These things have been sitting outside for about 6 months now. I didn't notice any fallout or waxy buildup in the 50/50 mix until below the 30 degree mark. If I lived in South FL I would be running 50/50 if not more wvo to diesel.

I did go through alot of filters unitl a couple of months ago when I started using the StarTron DA. Since then I have only rinsed out the primary 1x or 2...No wax to worry about with RUG, that's with Diesel...or so I've heard. It may depend on whether it's D1 or D2...I
I must have about 2,500 on WVO blend. There have been times I use WVO/ Diesel, and 10/90 RUG/WVO...I will be adding a facet 12v fuel pump to help with the delivery soon.

Where did you get the idea to run a Facet fuel pump from??? LOL....I thought you would have installed it by now!!

At over 18,000 miles clocked on RUG/WVO so far= close to 3 grand in fuel savings or one free average 300d/sd300

For those with a EAR TO HEAR & LISTEN...I am more than happy to help you getting started on WVO. There are rules that MUST be fallowed for trouble free operation. E:MAIL me with Q's & a phone #

It is my project for tomorrow AM. Home Depot for 14g wire, and some new splicers. Got the golf tees somewhere to plug the lines.
