Thanks for answering.I do not know if the engine is original
since the dealer has no records.Seems like it is leaking a lot of oil from the tensioner.Rest is perfect, lots of power, shifts fine ,not noisy ... Dealer wants a lot more than $10k,so it does not look promising. Semms like the gas models have a lot problems too, by reading the posts from the site you recommended. The evaporator is a scary one.Do they all fail ? Thanks |

I own a 1992 300SD and I can tell you that there are many things to look for on this and all 140's. I have been lucky that warranty has paid for 90% of my problems.
Most of the cars that I have seen that have made it to the mileage you indicated never had problems or have already had an engine replacement...but if the replacement was done you should be in good shape...many new parts and differnt design in replacements. You are right the 140's light years ahead in smoothness and power compared to 126...I have owned both as as a 124.The list is lenghty of things to check on this car...front end parts(not that expensive),evaporator(2500-3000)and blower resistor($300),closing assist pump ($950) and of course have engine checked over by an MB dealer with compression and leakdown..buying a car like this with that mileage and no records is a little risky...you might consider a 1990-1993 300D 2.5 ,a great car if your finances don't allow a 140,they are very competent cars with many of the updates of the latet diesel engines.. if you want more info you can e-mail me http://images.prosperpoint.com/images/1628/82440-1.jpg |

Also on the subject of the evaporator cores...my car is a 1992 and it has been replaced twice...and that job is so intensive I am not sure I would trust anyone but an MB dealer to do it...if for no other reason that you could go back on MB if one of their dealers made a mistake or did shoddy work....in regards to an earlier post about price...the 140 diesels still bring top dollar...rarity perhaps...especially if you live in an area where there are not many diesels... two years ago the MB dealer I use had a
1992 300SD 51K starmark vehicle that sold for $35K!!!..a car with 100K and good records should go for a low 20's figure if it has been a one owner with full MB records Warren Turner 1992 300SD silver/gray http://images.prosperpoint.com/images/1628/82440-1.jpg |
