Ticking sound on startup C250D
Hi there
I am new to this forum and finds it very interesting, I am a merc diesel fanatic. I have owned 3 x W123 300D's with in total more than 1,200,000 km's on the clock. I now own a 1996 250D Elegance. More refined but with a lot more small problems compared to the old 300D's. Did Merc produce these C250d's in the states? I have never seen a post regarding these cars. My question. On startup my cars makes a ticking sound which dissapears after about 10 seconds. Is this normal ? Could it be valves. The car has 190,000 km's on the clock and has a full serive history. Regards |

Maybe hydraulic valve lifters? Like a lot other engines have?
I believe its normal for a engine, which have these, that they tick a bit the first seconds, especially when it hasnt run for a day or more. |

I believe they were sold in the states as the 300D 2.5Turbo.
The ticking could be the hydraulic valve lifters. Sludge (Old Oil) or the improper oil can make them tick. |

The oil in this car is regularly changed at my local mechanic. Could this ticking sound do any harm to the engine. Someone suggested to do a engine flush to remove any dirt that might be sitting in the engine guides. This car is the W202 shape and is a non turbo model. Very much the same as the European models.

I wish the W202 diesels were sold here in the U.S.!!!
Theres no doubt I'd own one, and im sure many others would too. The W202 in my mind offers the ideal levels of equipment & handling wrapped into a nicely sized body. All we recieved here in the states were the 4cyl C220, C230, and C230 Kompressors; C280 inline 6 and V6 models; and the brilliant C36 & C43 AMG's... No diesels, no estates. I envy you and your diesel W202! Good luck with it.

The C250D uses an OM605. Anyone here familiar with that engine?

Hi
The C250D averages about 13.5 km's per liter when driven on the open road. Don't know how many mpg that is. Produces about 83 kw. Lovely car but not as fast as the C250TD which produces 110 kw. Last edited by Arno; 02-09-2006 at 02:35 AM. |

13.5kms per liter equates to 31.8 mpg (US gallons that is), not bad. 83kw in HP is 111HP.
The C250TD's 110kw converts to 147HP. They sound like nice cars, too bad we don't have them here, I'm sure they would've sold well, the C250D probably would've been the 240D of the 1990s here in the US.

I think the C250D can be compared to the 300D also being a 5 cyl and the C220D to the 240D being a 4 cyc.

The tappet noise is most probably the hydraulic lifters which operate on a cushion of oil contained inside the lifter -
If the seal wears over time it can fail to hold the oil under the same pressure leading to a gap - its ok on startup though as some oil may have drained out overnight. I have to do mine in the next week or so, if its still of interest can post a few 'how to' pics.

i THINK it might be safe to say that you could run a heavier oil because the greater temperatures over there. the thicker oil might help with the noise.

I switched to a thinner 10/40w from 15/40 and its about the same.
I think there is a trade off between the thinner oil getting into the lifter quicker when cold v thicker oil staying in there longer overnight.
