How long & how much to replace tranny?
I'm considering a car that is stuck in first. How many hours (shop time) to replace a tranny and what does a replacement cost? Where is the best source for a replacement trans?
Thanks! Randy |

I'm going to be pulling the engine and tranny out of my wrecked '85 soon and I've been reading the Chilton's guide section and it doesn't seem all that hard. Maybe since you're buying it and don't rely on it yet you could pull the engine and trans and replace some hard-to-get-to seals and maybe the starter. You could have one of the few cars here that doesn't mark its territory. That's what I'm shooting for. The bimmer more than makes up for any oil drips I'll save. That thing leaks like a sieve(sp?).

A little more info would be helpful. According to my Nicholl's/Chilton Labor Guide: Remove and replace tranny assembly 1984-89 190D, 190E 2.2, and 2.3 5.4 hrs 240D 4.2 hrs |

2 hrs out and 2 hrs in should cover the shop time. Depending on location you could be able to do the job for less than $800 total with good used parts including new seals, shift link rubber grommets and new tranny mount - with you buying the fiddly bits on internet in advance.
Location is key. Am certain at Hollywood it can cost as much as $3k. Speak to independent mechanics about good used tranny, thats what I'd do. Then you can clobber them if the tranny aint any good. |

Potentially it is an easy job as long as you find all the bolts.
I thought I had all of them out on the 87 but there was one bolt at the very top that could eluded me. When you look at diagrams of the bell housing it looks like there are two bolts on top but since the trans is tilted slightly to one side, one of the two bolts becomes one at the very top and its a hard one to get at on a car with the 603 engine. It may be easier on the 126 body with the 617 engine. Another problem I encountered was when I reinstalled the tranny in my car. The front lip of the metallic foil insulation from the top of the trannt tunnel got caught in between the engine and bell housing. I wasn't aware of that until I tried threading in the top bolts. What a pain it was to pull it out. I had to reseparate the tranny. I lost an hour messing with it.
