Give me a list please - tune-up for a 240D

Hey gang,
So I've put maybe two hundred miles on my new toy and I'm ready for some wrench action.

Of course I'll do the obvious:

- Fuel and oil filters
- Coolant
- Oil change (there's a small oil leak - not a good idea to put synthetic in?)

From what I've read here, diesel-specific stuff is
- Valve adjustment
- Clean banjo bolt

What else?

The car starts right up every time, but there's a bit of hesitation and misfires in the first minute. A friend driving behind me on the highway at night in traffic said he could definitely see my gear changes from first to second and second to third in his headlights.

What tools are needed to do a compression/leakdown test? Something that can be rented/easily obtained? I'm starting from scratch, so I don't have anything at all except some basic rachets and sockets.

Thanks!

air filter. no banjo on non turbo motors.

for compression test. 27mm socket to remove injector, diesel compression tester.

that is about it. not much to a tune up on a diesel.

the roughness if only on startup and goes away in a minute or so is probably a bad glow plug. if it is there will also be some blue smoke while the misfiring cylinder ejects unburned fuel.

welcome to benz land.

good luck with one of the best cars ever built. is it a stick?

Before going into a tune up drive it for awhile to get a good handle on what your fuel comnsumption is. First make sure you have a clean air filter before doing it though. Also as Tom said check the glow plugs out. The archives are a good guide. If you have no history on the car and milage or idle are not smooth enough compared to a good example then proceed with the injection pump timing and cam timing adjustments if indicated. The valve clearances should be checked before doing much of anything right away as they might inhibit milage or even cause your strange startup sequence. Again just check them and adjust as needed. Cheap and important plus once again they may not have been dealt with for a very long time if no records came with car or even if they did. Hope you gor a good engine and no sense even doing a compression check or leakdown without checking the valve clearances first. My guess is even if the compression was off a little there is not much you might do about it if engine was running pretty well making good or acceptble power because of the large cost of correction. A valve job might be the exception I guess. But even that may be quite a bit. The best of luck with the new car and do check your transmission and rear end fluid levels to make sure they have not unnoticed declined with time. The 616 engine running well is a nice thing to own. I have two and Tom has had several I believe. The 240d has a character even different that the five cylinder models.

no i dont have any left. i had three extra benzes so i put them all up for sale not really caring which sold.

of course the two 240s sold rather quickly.

they were nice though and both had pretty fresh motors.

Ok, sounds like a plan:

- change air filter
- figure out fuel consumption number (I expect low 20-s with the way I drive the poor thing)
- maybe do a 0-60 run to see if the time is as expected?

Yes it's a manual transmission car. I had no idea you can check fluid level in the rear diff and manual tranny, but I think it would be safe to assume that they need to be changed anyway. I'll add those two things to my list.

Thanks!
