upper oil pan shattered on low curb
hello, newbie to forum. have a 84 300sd that sort of found its way on to curb. the sump pan and upper oil pan are obliterated. i plan to change out myself. question: it looks like replacing the front crankshaft seal is a separate endeavor, has anyone replaced oil pan w/o front seal and survived? also how difficult is the rear seal to replace once pan is out? isnt it some kind of rope seal?
any help appreciated |

While it may be a rope type seal ( memory not sure about that ) I am sure from past discussions that it is not like you are thinking ... it can not be attached to a puller , rotate the crank that direction and it come out.. something about locking pins or something... and it may even be a round seal on the rear... anyway, do some searching in the archives and you should find the definitive answer... use my name as poster to start with...

The rear seal isn't too bad to replace, but getting to it is a little work. Make the little tool to cut the rope seal off square after you've seated it in the block. Then, install the other half in the upper oil pan. It's supposed to have 1mm interference on each side total. Then, reinstall crank, upper oil pan, front seal, remainder of engine. Remove from engine stand, and reinstall in vehicle (better to do it WITH the transmission) Use the right sealant between upper oil pan and block.

The 617 engine has a rope type seal at the rear. Changing the upper half will require removal of the crankshaft.

I just went thru one that had had the same incident. When you pull the upper oil pan all you have to do to replace the rear main is to remove the crank. When you remove the crank you may as well go ahead and replace the crank/rod brgs. The front main is really pretty easy at this point. Don't be surprised if you find the oil pump boogered up too.
