I need to change out the #5 glow plug, but it appears that the oil filter housing is in the way. Is there enough room to remove the plug without having to remove the housing?

This glowplug change is on my father's car. When he starts the car, the glowplug light does not come on and it is VERY difficult to start the car. I ohmned the plugs and number 1 shows infinity, 2,3,and 4 show resistance and number 5 shows only some resistance. So we are figuring on 2 bad glowplugs. Number 5 looked to bo blocked by the filter housing, but if you say there is room then that's a relief.

I just changed mine on 81 sd , I used a 12 mm box open end combo wrench . the part that was in the way for me was the heater hose that comes off the rear of the engine and goes to connection on fire wall. I cracked the old hose pulling it out of way . Was able to shorten it enough till new one came from fast lane, part number 126 832 20 94 Thats number for 81 sd might be different for your car. The cost of hose at fast lane was $10.86 and the quality looked fine dealer wanted $64.00 for same hose.So might be a good time to replace that hose with a new one while your doing glow plugs.

Do yourself (and car) a favor and do all 5. What I do is loosen it with a 12mm wrench, then if I can't turn it by hand after loosening a turn or 2, I can usually do alright with a mid-depth 1/4" drive socket. By mid-depth, I mean an inbetween-deep/shallow socket. A shallow will hit the end of the terminal end before it goes onto the hex, and a deep socket is too deep to work. Use this socket along with a universal "flex" adapter and about a 12" long 1/4" drive extension......Gilly

A GearWrench makes the job easy. It is good for adjusting the FI timing also. You can buy it from Pepboys. I got mine from Sears last year. IMPCO (www.************************) has similar tools called "Tech 4 side-ratchet wrench". You can also find the wrench from the following website:
