Wife + VW Beetle TDI + GreaseCar = DISASTER!!!

Well, it happened! My wife drove our VW Beetle TDI with the GreaseCar system by herself this evening and succeeded in driving the car halway across town in PURGE mode. Needless to say, she ran half the diesel tank into the WVO tank... Fortunately it only overflowed a *little* bit...

I think this is enough reason to *NEVER* let her drive my Benz, certainly not by herself - only with me in the passenger seat!!!

Blah blah blah... "Don't use veg-oil..." blah blah blah... "Just use diesel..." blah blah blah...

Remember that thing your mom always said, "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all..."

...it still applies.

I don't think his post could be considered "not nice" actually. There can be nice differences of opinions......
Sounds like somebody failed to properly train the wife. Remember, unlike us, they have something other than diesel auto's, and alternate fuels.

Wow, I'm surprised at the negative posts regarding WVO use. I thought this was a more WVO-friendly forum... perhaps all the WVO advocates have already retired for the evening...

Especially considering the light-hearted nature of my initial post, I didn't expect such gloomy responses...

That is true - a good friend of mine had a great acronym for the female of our species:

EBU = Estrogen Based Unit

You're right, they do run on an alternate fuel themselves.

I know, but these kind of things have a predictable life cycle (kinda like the pet rock).

The folks selling these "kits" will make a little money, a few cars will get hacked up, most of these guys will get sick of dumpster diving, the "suppliers" of WVO will figure out they can get paid for this garbage and/or they will get nervous about suppling untaxed fuel, we'll eventually have more parts cars.

Don't worry about the little forum flames. Some would find something to complain about with a free Gull Wing.
BTW: I too hope the fad ends soon. Maybe my neighbor will fold leaving the better WVO from the Chinese restaurant for me!

It's hard to get sick of saving $30 to $40 a week or $120 to $160 a month. I would hardly call alternative fuels a fad.

The suppliers I have could care less what I do with the oil. Why should they? They are in no way responsible for what I'm doing with it. They actually think it's pretty cool.
As far as getting paid for their WVO even if they did so what? .50c or a dollar a gallon is still less than $3.00 a gallon and there is no dependence on foreign oil.

I appreciate your opinions but I think your dead wrong.

Danny

It's been around for longer that most people know. I remember this being done in Oregon around 88, 89.

This “Fad” has lasted for the last 20 years in Europe and keeps going stronger, ELSBETT even build engines specifically to burn WVO - SVO or used automatic transmission fluid and they convert cars that we haven’t seen in the US.

Veggie oil not a long-term global solution

I love the concept of veggie oil as fuel, and am well on my way to finishing my greasecar conversion, but I don't think it is a long term solution on any large scale. How would it be possible to plant enough acres of vegetables to produce the oil to run all those cars? There isn't enough land! And there probably isn't enough water either, to irrigate the crops.

I for one, hope this SVO/WVO "niche" remains just that, and doesn't become too popular. That way there's more fuel for me!

So I say to the "naysayers": Bring it on!

I agree completely, whether it's a niche or a fad, homemade WVO/SVO will stay very small. Commercial BD is the only way that alternative diesel fuels will ever get any real traction. If you guys want to actually accomplish something, how about supporting your local BD supplier?
