New Injector vs. New Nozzle

I have a few extra bucks that I would like to put into the 81 300D that I recently bought. I didn't earn this money but the insurance company of the fellow that wrecked my beautiful 84 300D is going to give it to me so I don't go screaming to a lawyer. Since I am essentially getting "free" money I feel okay about doing some stuff mechanically to this car in an effort to get it in as good a shape as possible. One of the things I'm thinking about is new injector nozzles. I don't know why, I just feel like starting new would be nice. But before I blow this money, I thought I'd get some feedback. If I don't have any immediate reason to suspect misfires etc. is this a decent way to spend some money?? There is considerable surface rust on the injector's themselves as the car sat for a while before I purchased. Should this rust be a concern? Should I just do a good old fashioned diesel purge?

As an aside, other things I plan on doing include:

5 new glow plugs (i KNOW these are very much needed)
Valve adjustment
New monovalve (getting cold here in Maine)
New rear quarter panels (totally rusted out)
New brake pads (could use them)
Already put in new fuel filters & oil change (waiting for turbo sized air filter, since I've had two non turbo sized ordered from the store)
Probably going to replace fuel return lines
Transmission fluid flush
Coolant flush (replace with mercedes stuff)
New battery (I have the most rinky dink battery I've ever seen in there now)
Already cleaned out banjo bolts.

Any input would be most welcome. I miss my old Benz so much. As an aside on the topic of turbo spooling, I most definately could hear the turbo spool in my old car. Every time I hit a certain RPM. Turbo in this car not really working, going to clean out banjo bolt on the ALDA itself too. Thanks for input.

Rust on the exterior body of the injector means nothing. To check an injector, it needs to be removed and pop tested for pressures and spray pattern. There's a good BOSCH shop in Portland.

I agree with the above statement for two reasons. First is that new injectors could be poorer than what you have already from reports. Plus yours may check just fine or only one needs attention for example. I believe there is a gentleman with good feedback on ebay with a checked out set for a non turbo engine. On now for 135.00. Get a price for a check locally and if close dollar wise you could grab those. I am not the guy selling them by the way. Really not even 135.00 as he throws in a new filter and the braided hose to connect the returns of the injectors and another thing or two like new heat shields.

I replaced the nozzles on my injectors with the popular Bozio brand and was very happy with the results...It can be problematic however as it took me a couple of tries to get them in without leaking diesel. The best thing is that the fuel mileage increased enough to make it well worth the effort....

Injectors

G'mornin Folks,

Remove your injectors, take them to your local "Fuel Injection Shop".....unless you have a injector test stand......have them test pop your injectors......they will check the spray pattern.....and for nozzle dribble......as well as poping pressure........

They will replace nozzles as necessary.......will depend on spray pattern and dribble......

They will adjust popping pressure to Bosch specs........

They will return them to you complete with new seal rings......ready for reinstallation...

All you will have to do is......

Acertain that all of the seal washers are out of injector well......

Clean the injector well with a rag.....on a stick.....I use a gun cleaning kit.....patches with gun cleaning solvent (carbon solvent)......and the little wire brushes.......works fer me......

Re-Install reworked injectors with new seal rings.....and torque to proper spec....I could look that up....but you can as well......

One more thing.....ask about calibrating your injection pump.....find out how much it will cost.....if within your budget......do that too......

Luck to ya...
SB

just for the record...and to finally give back a tiny bit to this forum that I have a pathological addiction to reading but not posting, I did the same as Ramblin - replaced all six nozzles with bosio from D.G. and they seem to be performing well - most noticeable improvement is that cold starts are MUCH smoother. I did toy with the idea of having them pop tested after fitting the new nozzles, but I thought I"d just see how they ran first. Now I'll just wait until next year and see how they are doing. By the way, the old nozzles were quite loaded with soot. One, in fact was apparently clogged (which is where this story really begins) - no doubt because I am running unwashed B100 - probably could have given them a good cleaning and been OK. Anyone who still wonders what the side-effects of running anything with glycerol in it...maybe I'll try to dig up the picture I took and post it.

have fun,

prc

kinda hard sifting through ebay listings, not knowing how it was listed, or who listed it.
I searched ebay, found 50 injector related items, none were 135.00...
the auction sounds like a good deal to me. oh, well.

picture of sooty injector - not sure what they look like when running Diesel. Left pic with flash, right without - this is the injector that was presumably clogged.
