Diesel Purge: to do or not to do?

My Dad is very concerned about doing a purge on my 1984 300 SD. He said it may actually do more harm than good. Like the compression may get off or something like that.

Well anyways, Does my Dad have any substance to his claim? Is it or could it be harmful?

And if you have used it before do you have any testimonials?

Thanks,

Tony

I have never heard of anything but great things about DP. It helped my car out a ton.

Thumbs up Do the Purge.....

It works, and cannot harm anything......it's mostly diesel fuel, with some chemicals that clean the system and burn hotter to remove carbon deposits....most here seem to "do the purge" on a regular basis.

Dude, these engines are darn near indestructible. Purge, Seafoam, etc etc. I"m presently running a cocktail of chemicals in my tank that'd take NASA scientists years to sort out, and she's a running great!

Just did it on my 87TD and my 86 Golf, helped out a lot. I noticed a huge reduction in smoke on my TD after it drank two bottles of DP. I could only give my Golf one bottle b/c it gets such good mileage and doesn't have A/C. I would have had to run that little car for an hour before two bottles were gone.

Highly recommended, but search around for the best price. I just got 6 bottles for $35.

This is where I bought mine ($5.20/bottle): http://store.interautopartssd.com/

I've seen it listed much, much higher than that.

purge

I was told a while ago, can't remember who by, that a good thing to do with a Mercedes diesel was to fill the filter housing with ATF and then let it burn that off. Never tried it, dunno. I do know that ATF is pretty highly refined oil or a special type. I've used it in squirt cans as a penetrating oil, and it works great. Doesn't smell as good as Marvel Mystery Oil, and not as nice a can...seo

The car will not run exclusively on the ATF for very long because most of it will be returned to the fuel tank and mixed in with the diesel. For the short time that the car DOES burn the ATF you'll notice that it really runs very quietly.

to purge or not to purge

I used it once on my '78 617-912. I had an injector misfiring so bad that when the engine was cold, it sounded like pistons hitting valves. It helped some but only temporarily. Then the knock was back.

Later on, I ran through a tank of VWO and the knock became really persistant ... even warmed up to operating temperature. I then bought a bottol of Power Service Diesel Kleen Cetane boost and measured out a six point Cetane boost and haven't heard from that injector in months and months. Conclusion: Diesel Purge may be over-rated. I'm not impressed.

I've done it once, it ran ultra smooth on the purge stuff, but normal again afterwards. Same for both of our cars. I don't do it, I drive my car nice and hard on the freeway a lot so its probably ultra clean inside anyways.

In theory carbon dislodged during the purge could get stuck between a valve and valve seat, causing a slight loss of compression.

I was told this by a factory trained MB technician, and further warned to limit my use of snake oils for this reason.
