I'll put my spare tire on and take the tire to another shop for a second opinion. I took the car to a body shop today, they also said it was the steering knuckle, and that it was safe to drive on. The picture makes the sidewall damage look worse than it actually is, its only about maybe twice as thick as the big lettering on the tire at the deepest point.
