Broken Oil Pick Up Boot

I was doing my standard oil pan gasket change, and I discovered that my oil pick up boot was destroyed. How this could happen is unknown, since the pan hasnt encountered curbs, rocks or other oil pan killers.

Does anybody know the part number for this boot? (82 300TD)

Hmmm.....seeing that makes me want to take mine off for inspection...perhaps at my next oil change in 3-4 weeks.... Ahh, the list of repairs never ends. Just did a set of glow plugs and a pair of headlights tonight, took forever. Lots more to do tomorrow!

Scary, isnt it?

I had no symptoms of low oil pressure, and my pressure guage was reading 2.5 to 3 even around sharp corners. I am hoping that I wasnt pulling in air to the oil stream...

This shows what inspections can turn up. The problem is, I have no idea where to buy this part, and dont know what the part number is.

I highly doubt it was sucking air, almost the entire oil pump assembly is submerged in oil all the time, so there's no way it could suck any air in. As for the part....call Phil or Roy at fastlane here on this site (click "Buy Parts" up above), they can probably get it for you, if not, call your local dealer....they will be able to get it.

Im glad you think I didnt suck in air. When I saw this boot, I immediately wondered how much damage I did. If this whole pump is immersed in oil, do I need the pick up boot? Should I just leave it?

Looks like I will be calling Roy on Monday. I just talked to him yesterday...

Ive looked at many online car parts catalogs, and couldnt find the boot seperate from the pump.

The boot/screen are pretty much there just as a precaution in case anything ended up in the oil that could do damage if sucked through the system. Probably best to replace it and have one on there.

Precaution? If something gets through the screen and it's not very tiny, it will lock up the oil pump.

Edited to add: Don't even consider trying to repair this. Pieces of the boot could get through the screen with the same effect. In case you're thinking the screen will save you, I've seen more than one with a hole worn through, due to debris that the screen initially kept out.

If I cant find the boot, could I just trim off the damaged area? The pump will still be immersed in oil, right?

Will the dipstick reading still be accurate?

I agree. If the thing is brittle and crumbling, its probably best to remove it completely.

Don't bother with Napa. Click on "Buy Parts" above and find the phone number for Phil or Roy. I imagine that they can fix you up.
