Wow, I can barely restrain myself from making a very inappropriate and crude comment... but will power is winning out. LOL

That is basically what this thread is about. I guess it depends on what extreme of this thread they follow. One person suggests never while one suggests hot and often.

Sure... though what's still unclear, how do you change the filter?

Back in those days, engines frequently did not last that long even with regular oil changes!!!

When David Dunbar Buick personally delivered that car to the girl friend. Maybe he ommited to mention the needed oil changes? I can relate to that. Thats why I use those little reminder stickers for the wife. She then tells me when she is due for an oil change.
Life was simpler back then as well as there where no filters to deal with. Although invention was rampant throughout all this time.
For a random example. The first use I am aware of using synthetic filter type material of a fine mesh consistancy was in the late 60s to early 70s. I am just unsure of the exact date I first bumped into the material . It was initually utilized in the construction of panty hose. .

Still practicing a great degree of will power. Now that you guys added "hot" and "often" to the list of adjectives - it is becoming even more difficult.

Hmmm this is something I actually have some experience in. At least till I find and fix it I will probably never change the oil in my 300D just the filter every 3k the reasoning though is probably different. I have to add about a quart of oil every 2 weeks. at this rate none of the original oil will be in the engine by any stretch by the time I get too 3000miles so I already am changing the oil at a ratio of less than once every 3000 miles so why bother :-)

My jeep ate a quart a DAY (450,000 miles long story of me and a 50ft mud hole :-) but that straight 6 is nearly invincible :-)

Otherwise I would ALWAYS change my oil every 3k for a few very simple reason. ONE its cheap $16 and I do not even have to do it myself and #2 its the absolute CHEAPEST and incredibly effective INSURANCE you can buy for your car :-)

If I ever manage to get my oil leak fixed (it does not drip onto the ground sooo.. its either a under pressure while driving leak (no residue on the rear of the car like my jeep gets) or its eating it through the engine.

I basically have to add a quart around every 5 or 6 hundred miles. I have no idea if this is normal I am assuming no. but it does mean its illogical to change the oil every 3k since I already am. I just change the filter though I bet since I am getting so much new oil into the system so often I could probably extend that to 5k (what do you guys think?)

If this is a beater car you do not depend on go for it. will be a fun experiment at the minimum. But if you depend on this as a daily driver I would be friendly to it. Think of it as an ice cream for the kids. its a nice treat for your car and keeps it happy :-) and a really cheap treat at that!
