I would go with B100, or a blend of 80% veggie oil and 20% kerosene. RUG tends to separate from the veggie oil when left unused for a while.

![]() First of all, you shouldn't run out of fuel. If you do and you cannot access *real* fuel (diesel or biodiesel), then I guess the best/safest bet would be fresh vegi oil mixed with a little RUG or Kerosine.

Finally found where I posted the lubricity results.
What happens if straight kero is burned? Post number 4. I agree, you should not run out of fuel. I did it right after I bought my car. I bought it in Ohio, filled the tank with diesel, drove it for a few days, and then drove home to Tennessee. I got to within a block of my house with the gauge sitting on 1/4 and the tank flat empty. No, the hoses were not reversed. Yes, my gauge would not go to less than 1/4. Sometimes it happens. -Jim

Is there any reason you can't just keep an extra few gallons of diesel in your garage? Diesel isn't a particular hazard storage-wise, and can sit for a long time. I don't see how you'd run through a whole tank, and then through that extra few gallons, without being able to refill at some point. It's kind of fun to be able to say "Oh, in an emergency, I can run my car on ______!," but I find it hard to believe any such emergency would arise, unless you don't have a diesel station within 500 miles of you.

Fix your fuel guage
There are SO many people on this forum with fuel gauges that don't work, and it's an easy fix. So I agree with a previous post, don't run out in the first place.
That said, it's always good to know what alternatives will work ![]() jeff 1991 300d |

5 gal Kero + 1Qt 30wt
In Jamaica we would often have to substitute a mixture of 5Gal Kero plus a quart of motor oil for lubricity...often deliveries were days late or otherwise ran out.
The infrastructure there was/is very antiquated and deep inland rural areas are irregularly supplied. Smart folk stock their own home farm-tank to fuel their generators, tractors, and autos. Gasoline was mostly used in motorbikes since it was 3 times more expensive than Diesel fuel. Course now they use lots more propane or alcohol from cane and import vehicles from Brazil

I keep 5gallons of diesel in the garage, and for on-road emergencies, I have 2 quarts of ATF in the trunk.

I keep a few quarts of both motor oil and ATF in the trunk, ostensibly in case the car is low on either, but I wouldn't hesitate to dump either in the tank in an emergency. I would probably use the motor oil before the ATF.

the car dosnt take the full two gallons of diesel I usually buy; so one always ends up in the trunk half full.
I also keep some AFT and powersteering (along with MM oil) in the trunk,. and coolant....spare tool kit....

"What can I use for diesel fuel in an emergency?"
Cell phone and Visa card, MB roadside will bring you out a few gallons in a jiff. Pigs will fly before I put jerry cans in my trunk, that would smell just wonderfull. These cars have large tanks so its kind of hard to run them out of fuel, but with certain people its quite possible. ![]()

not valid. my gf & i drove INTO houston when the exodus began, then we were SMART enough to take back-roads on our way OUT. every once in a while, as we were cruising at 60mph alone, we would catch a glimpse of I-10 over a hillside. it was a parking lot. we even stopped in shiner, Texas and had a couple of free beers at the brewery and still beat some other friends back home to the austin area that took the route the government told everyone to take. hahahahaha. another funny thing about our choice of path...most of the roads we took had old signs from way back when that said "hurricane evacuation route".

My vote would be for a couple of gallons of canola or soybean oil. There's no smell, no fire hazard, and 2 gallons = about 40 miles. Once you dump the 2 gallons in, get to a filling station as soon as possible and cut it with 1/2 gallon of unleaded, then start looking for diesel.
My 300D runs great on a 80/20 oil/RUG mix, and the exhaust smells great, too.

I've run out before, so I carry diesel in the trunk now.
I normally go by the miles... and I did find out the hard way that my reserve light doesn't work. My old rule was "this sdl will go at least 550 on a tank" - I'd sometimes take it up into the 580s and still have a gallon left when I'd fill it up... Now here's the tricky bit. I always fill it right up until I can see the fuel ready to spill over the neck of the filler, ALWAYS. So why did I run out at 528 one night when that tank wasn't driven any differently than the others? IDK... but I just carry 2.5 gallons of diesel in a Roundup container in the trunk, we've made a wooden box that goes all the way across the back of the trunk for keeping spare _____ in - Right now my trunk contains: *2.5 gallons diesel *2 qts Rotella *1 qt ATF *1 qt power steering (yes i know i could just use the atf) *1/2 gallon mixed antifreeze *1 gallon clear water(not drinkable, it's in a refilled windshield fluid bottle) *jumper cables, wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers, rags, and a funnel Just so I don't get rear ended and the other guy's engine catches fire, I'm good ![]() |
