The Jeep is very quite, for a diesel, so a lot of people won't even believe me when I tell them it's one ... but it certainly sounds different from a gasser, especially at throttle. So people think it's too quiet to be a diesel and must be a malfunctioning gasser. They look at me like, "WHAT did that chick do to her Jeep?!!"
yah, I don't get any second looks when fueling the Benz, (though I normally leave it running with the doors locked...... gotta love remote-start car alarms!!) but I get them from time to time driving my grandma's diesel truck.... It's a 1500 (1/2 ton), 2wd, and is completely unmarked.. Only a SERIOUS GM diesel enthuisiast could tell (bumper style, ride height, etc...) People crane their neck and look at you like "boy will that guy be sorry." then I fire it up and heads snap to see! (For those who haven't heard, GM 6.5L TD's rattle like a pile of scrap in a rock tumbler......) It's really funny!!

Sorry to take this OT:
Not trying to pick a fight, just telling it like I see it. Obviously you don't have to see it my way.
I can say why I do from experience. I've owned both a 617 and a 603. I'll never ever buy another post 85 Benz ever again.
BTW, how many times have you heard of a cracked head or bent rods in older (pre-85) diesel engines?
Should we start a new thread about this?

I'll take it OT a little bit further. Since you have a gasoline MB in your fleet though not equipped with this engine, would you say that the M116/M117 family of engines built since the early 70's and 722.0/1/2/3 transmissions built since the late 60's started to decline in quality after 1985, though pre 85 units were virtually identical to post 85 units?

Don't know much about the 116/117's. From experience, the transmission was holding up much better in the 123 than it was in the 124 I had. They both had about the same mileage when I had them.

The best or nothing didn't except for the a/c, the blower fan, the modulator, the radio, and the cracked plastic over the wood trim. ..And we made it bad year in, year out!

I love my '91. Runs great. I heard MB diesels died in 1998. I think that was the last year for the inline 6 engine that was basically the 1995 model year motor. Probably the best they ever made. I'm just guessing in 2002, after a few year hiatus of making them (I think that's when they restarted making diesels), they started making good diesels again.

I wouldn't count out their new diesels. They are loaded with electronics, but they kick serious but!
0-60 in 6.6 and 35 MPG.
